An idea sparked in Catherine’s mind. She nodded, her expression exaggeratedly sympathetic. “I can’t believe that! I don’t blame your sister-in-law for being upset. I would be furious too.”
Melissa shrugged. “Jessica’s a slut. If you’d seen her at eighteen, you’d understand. She was the type of girl every man dreamed of—so soft and sweet. Now she’s all cold and unapproachable.”
That evening, Catherine had to leave to pick up Amy, so she turned down Melissa’s invitation to stay for dinner.
Later, when Jerry Lee came home, Melissa greeted him with uncharacteristic warmth, taking his suit jacket and linking her arm through his. Jerry, a man in his forties, had been smitten with Melissa from the moment he saw her. But at the time, his wife had been gravely ill, and he couldn’t bring himself to cheat. He’d waited until after she passed away to approach the Gates family. Since their marriage, Melissa had been mostly indifferent to him. He hadn’t minded much, as long as they fulfilled their marital duties at night. But feeling her arm in his now, he thought that maybe a little affection wasn’t so bad after all.
“You seem happy today,” Jerry said with a smile.
Melissa pouted playfully. “AuraLive is a big deal, right? Can you do a little corporate espionage for me?”
Jerry raised an eyebrow. “You want to get involved in the business?”
“No, not really,” she said, shaking her head. “I just want you to sign one of my favorite streamers.”
“Alright. Who is it?”
“That pet psychic from StreamSphere, the one with over ten million followers. I just love his content.”
At her words, Jerry’s smile faded slightly. “I’ve tried to recruit him before, but honestly, I haven’t had any luck.”
For the sake of taking Jessica down, Melissa decided to play along. “Fine. What is it?”
“From now on, I want you to stop being at each other’s throats with my son. You need to be the bigger person; you’re the adult. Your constant fighting makes things very difficult for me. I work hard all day, and the last thing I want is to come home and play referee.”
Melissa’s jaw tightened. After a long moment, she finally gave a reluctant nod. “Fine.”
Pleased, Jerry pulled her into a passionate embrace.
“Am I interrupting something?”
