On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 253

Jessica remained silent.

The officer consulted his notes. “It was Willie Brown’s wedding. Why did you go upstairs?”

“Check the security footage,” she finally said.

“There were no active cameras on that floor,” the officer replied. “We know you went up to change your clothes, but why didn’t you go to your own assigned room?”

Jessica took a deep breath. “Amanda needed to use the restroom and wanted her Peppa Pig toy. I went to her room to get it for her.”

“But Amanda said she never asked for a toy.”

“If you believe me, then she’s lying,” Jessica said, her voice weary. “If you don’t, then investigate. The truth will come out eventually.”

“According to witness statements from the victim’s family, you have a strained relationship with both his wife and his sister. We also heard that the victim once had feelings for you. Was this some kind of revenge…?”

Jessica let out a cold laugh. “They aren’t worth my time. I was drugged. There must still be traces of it in my system.”

“The toxicology report isn’t back yet,” the officer noted.

“Then I have nothing more to say right now,” Jessica stated, leaning back.

The officer nodded and left the room. A few moments later, two female officers entered.

“Hello,” one of them said gently. “My daughter is about the same age as yours. I can understand that if what you’re saying is true, your daughter was essentially an accomplice. It must be devastating, which is why you’re so withdrawn.”

“Do you know Amy lied?” Jessica cut in.

Lance frowned. “She’s just a child. She wouldn’t lie.”

Jessica just smiled a sad, empty smile. “Rebecca, let’s go.”

Rebecca nodded and hit the gas, the car speeding past Lance. He stood there for a long time before raising a hand and slapping himself hard across the face. He had come here to help, but somehow, they had ended up fighting before they’d even said a full sentence. It was always like this. He wanted to communicate, but it always fell apart.

Taking a deep breath, he got in his car to go pick up Amy.

When Daniel Gates woke up, he told the police exactly what had happened. He knew he had been drugged and that Jessica had been defending herself. He had no intention of pressing charges.
