On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 273

The director grew more animated with every word, as if he could already see the millions in revenue. "Honestly," he said, beaming, "the only reason we finished this series so smoothly and quickly is because every single person here gave it their all. This success belongs to everyone." He raised his glass. "So here's to all of us. To our hard work!"

Everyone rose, clinking their glasses with his.

"I'm finishing mine, you all drink as you please," he declared, downing his glass in one go.

Jessica did the same.

"Are you crazy?" Rebecca whispered, pressing a hand over Jessica's glass. "If you drink like that, you'll be drunk in an hour, and I'm not carrying you home. Just take a sip."

Jessica just smiled at her. "I know."

After they sat down, the male lead turned to Jessica. "Ms. Brown, how come your friend didn't come tonight?"

Jessica's smile faltered for a second. "He had something to take care of," she said softly.

"You guys have no idea," the actor said to the table. "I've never met anyone who just radiates 'CEO' like that man. I was lucky to have his guidance; it helped me put on a halfway decent imitation."

"It's true," the director chimed in. "His presence is incredible. Ms. Brown, where did you find a friend like that?"

"He's a... bodyguard for a wealthy family," Jessica said casually. "He's just picked things up from being around them."

Hearing this, Rebecca shot Jessica a quick, apologetic look from the corner of her eye. Jessica just curved her lips into a smile and took another drink.

Jessica felt a momentary daze.

The actress waved. "Well, I'm heading home. Goodbye!"

And then they were all gone. The lively chatter evaporated, leaving a profound silence in its wake. Jessica kicked at a loose leaf on the pavement.

"I'll take you to your apartment, or do you want to come back to the hotel with me?" Rebecca asked, taking her arm.

Jessica didn't answer. Rebecca guided her into the car.

Once inside, Rebecca gripped the steering wheel and turned to her. "What's wrong with you? I could tell something was off all night."
