At the White residence at that time...
Since school was on break yesterday, Kiara had returned home. She had initially thought about visiting her elder sister Ariana, but reconsidered upon realizing how busy Ariana must be.
Just then, a classmate texted asking if she wanted to hang out. After a brief hesitation, Kiara agreed—staying cooped up at home would be unbearably dull anyway.
But...
Never in her wildest dreams did Kiara expect to run into Jane. Or perhaps "run into" wasn't the right term. Her expression darkened visibly.
They had just finished their outing and were about to head their separate ways when one of her classmates, eyeing Jane curiously, blurted out, "Kiara, is this the sister you're always talking about?" It was common knowledge in their dorm that Kiara had an incredibly doting older sister who spoiled her rotten.
Given the striking resemblance between the two women and Jane's immediate claim of being Kiara's sister, their friends naturally assumed she was the beloved sibling Kiara often mentioned.
With icy detachment, Kiara corrected, "She's not."
Jane's face fell at the blunt rejection. Forcing a pained smile, she said softly, "Kiara, I may not be as wealthy as Sister Ariana, but I am your blood sister... I—"
Her words were abruptly cut off by gasps of surprise from Kiara's friends.
The dramatic pause, of course, was entirely deliberate—
a calculated move to paint herself as the wounded party.
As expected, some who didn't know the whole story couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Jane. They turned to Kiara and said, "Kiara, maybe there's some misunderstanding between you and your sister? Since she's come all this way, why not talk it out?"
Though these were all Kiara's classmates at the gathering, some weren't particularly close to her—their relationships were lukewarm at best.
The moment Kiara heard them taking Jane's side, her expression darkened. Disgust flickered across her face, but she held back from saying anything too harsh. Instead, she replied coolly, "I have things to do. It's about time we wrapped up—see you all back at school." Her words were a clear dismissal, a not-so-subtle hint for the nosy onlookers to leave.
Some of her classmates immediately looked embarrassed, while others even flashed with irritation.
Kiara had a way of stripping people of their dignity with her words. They glanced at Jane, convinced that Kiara must have turned her back on her own sister now that she'd made something of herself. Why else would her sister mention that "Sister Ariana" of hers is so wealthy? Clearly, there was more to the story.
Still, they didn't linger long—after all, they'd been practically told to leave.
Only two or three of Kiara's closer friends shot her a concerned look before leaving. They knew a thing or two about her family situation.
Kiara gave them a slight nod, silently reassuring them not to worry.
Only after they were gone did she turn to Jane with icy detachment. "What do you want now?"
Jane's face twisted in displeasure. "Is that any way to talk to your own sister?"
Kiara let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, please enlighten me—what tone should I use? How much did you ever care for me growing up? And after I was finally acknowledged by the family, all you saw me as was competition for resources. Nothing but sneers and that slap the first time we met. Jane, if you were in my shoes, what would you do?"
This had always been a deep-seated pain in Kiara's heart.
Back then, she had genuinely wondered what her biological sister would be like. Having just returned to the White family, she was naturally anxious and uncertain.
Jane gritted her teeth. "Lend me thirty million first. I'll pay you back with interest once I have the money."
Kiara: "..."
Jane stared straight at Kiara, her gaze unwavering. "I admit I was wrong before, and I'm apologizing. After all, you were lost outside since childhood—how was I supposed to know if that person was really you? I genuinely thought someone was impersonating you." She paused, then added, "You're the only one who can help me now. Mom and Dad are gone. In this world, no one is closer to me than you. Are you really going to stand by and watch your own sister drown in this mess without lifting a finger?"
It had to be said—Jane knew exactly how to tug at people's heartstrings. And it was true—for Kiara, the long-faded memory of her parents held a significance unlike anything else.
But still...
Even if she wanted to honor their memory, there was no way she could cough up thirty million!
Kiara frowned, studying Jane intently. "I don’t have that kind of money. The most I can give you is a hundred thousand." And even that was painstakingly saved from the pocket money her uncle and Ariana occasionally gave her. Kiara had grown up in hardship, and even after returning to the White family, she never developed extravagant habits.
She never spent recklessly.
Some things never changed.
Jane’s expression darkened instantly. What good was a hundred thousand? Her voice turned icy. "Are you still holding a grudge over that slap from back then? A hundred thousand? Are you treating me like some beggar? I’m your own sister—even if I messed up before, you shouldn’t be like this. Oh, right. You’re the White family’s second daughter now. And me? What am I?"
Kiara was taken aback. Instinctively, she defended herself, "That’s not it. I really don’t have more than that."
Jane scoffed, her face cold with disbelief. "Who are you kidding? Ariana dotes on you so much, and you only have a hundred thousand? Do you think I’m stupid?"
