was overreacting. I didn’t recognize greatness when I saw it. Please be the bigger man and ignore me.”

“That’s more like it.” Blake pressed down the corners of his mouth-failed-and the smile came surging back anyway. He couldn’t hold back from praising, “His Majesty Agares has incredible taste. I really like Agares’s wife.

“Look at her. I was trying to save him a little face-didn’t tell all 310,000 people that the biggest anomaly was the Empire’s Light. But his wife? She didn’t leave him a shred of dignity. She just kicked the whole hornet’s nest over in one go. That’s guts.”

“Yes, yes

His Majesty’s eye for people is outstanding,” Aslan echoed obediently, while silently thinking, None of you are worried about playing the Empire’s Shield to death, huh? We’re all just waiting for the Empire to explode.

“That’s right. Nobody beats His Majesty when it comes to choosing people.” Blake lifted his chin proudly, grinning, then bent to pick up the sunglasses he’d laughed right off his own face, hooking them back onto his nose. He made sure to emphasize every word as he continued praising His Majesty.

Aslan, now fully resigned to being a glorified background prop, piled on the free flattery. “Yes, when it comes to picking people, His Majesty’s vision is uniquely sharp and ruthless. Anyone he chooses is one-of-a-kind, absolutely unmatched.”

Blake let out a smug little hum. “Well, since our sweetheart enjoys muddying the waters, I’ll give her a hand-stir it even muddier, make it easier for her to fish in chaos and bond properly with my little prince.”

He said this as he tapped into the warplane’s comms system. Then, he poured a drum of oil and tossed in a lit torch over the entire planet, his voice dropping steady and clear. “All units, attention, all units, attention. The biggest anomaly in this training exercise is the Empire’s Light, the people’s idol-Agares.”

“The Eagle will only remain on this planet for three to five days. All units, pay attention. Mind the time, mind the time. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to hunt down and take out the Eagle.”

In the co-pilot seat, Aslan went silent.

This man clearly thought the world wasn’t burning hard enough. If there wasn’t a wildfire, he’d personally drop a nuke.

These two really were Agares’s family.

Down below, the original fifteen-man instructor squad and the twenty-man First Academy squad had already been stunned by the news that the “anomaly” they were supposed to catch was actually the Empire’s Light.

They still half-believe it. Their first instinct was just to pull out their hidden guns and aim for the fleeing girl on the vine and the man who’d just burst out of the tree line.

They’d barely raised their weapons when–

A massive wave of mental energy crashed over them, pinning their movements. Their fingers couldn’t control the guns anymore, and the muzzles swung wildly.
