The moment they heard the announcement, every ‘corpse’ on the ground started pounding their chests and howling.
So close.
They’d been so close.
Just one step away. They were one step away from taking down the Empire’s Light, from capturing the people’s idol.
Regret.
Pure, bitter regret that they hadn’t listened to that girl swinging away on the vine.
They should’ve listened to her earlier, should’ve gone full auto and done an indiscriminate sweep on Agares. What if just one blank had tagged him?
All it would’ve taken was a single blank landing on him, and they would’ve won!!!

Across the planet, every freshman, upperclassman, and instructor who heard the command center’s broadcast over comms went absolutely feral, like they’d just mainlined pure adrenaline.
None of them had ever imagined that in this year’s military training, the ultimate “anomaly” would be the Empire’s Commander himself.
The Empire’s Commander, showing up at a tiny school training exercise?
This was basically a once-in-a-lifetime miracle, like having a trillion stellar coins fall on your head out of nowhere.
Add in the previous order they’d received; no internal fighting. Work together. Capture the Eagle.
And the time limit was only three to five days.
Now, every last one of them was converging westward, unified front, mindset aligned-target the Empire’s Light, Agares.
Up above, Sylvara was still swinging along on the Smokewillow, skimming the treetops.
Her earpiece was crystal clear, piping Blake’s voice directly into her ears.
After listening, she balled her hand into a fist, heart burning with satisfaction. Nice one, Blake, she crowed inwardly. And right then, she heard a sharp crack of breaking branches behind her.

She twisted her head back and saw Agares right on her tail, springing cleanly from branch to branch, movements sharp and efficient, those dark eyes razor-keen like a hunting eagle’s, his whole aura basically screaming he fully intended to murder her.
War-light flared in Sylvara’s eyes. She split the Smokewillow into two strands, threading them through the trees, swinging hard and fast like the vine had grown there naturally, and using it to fling herself further ahead while leaving Agares far behind.
A few minutes later, she spotted the fifty-man Second Academy squad mentioned in the earlier
comms.
Her eyes narrowed. Time to rerun the script. Leaning on the advantage of her Fifth Academy combat suit, she angled downward toward the fifty-man squad, shouting as she skimmed past overhead, “Second Academy fifty-man squad, the Eagle is straight ahead of you! Get ready-get ready!”
The fifty-man team from the Second Academy heard the voice raining down from above. They all tilted their heads back, raised their guns, and aimed at her.
Sylvara snapped the Smokewillow and cracked it across the arm of the guy about to pull the trigger, whacking his gun clean out of his hand as she snarled, “You useless scrubs, why the hell are you pointing your guns at me? You blind? Can’t see this Fifth Academy uniform? I’m on your side!
“I’m telling you, the Eagle is right in front of you, less than 650 feet away. Raise sweep, sweep, sweep! You idiots!”

The
guy who’d tried to shoot her had his gun knocked right out of his grip.
The others, stung by the insult and reassured by the uniform she was wearing quickly raised their guns and peered down their scopes, scanning the front. Not seeing anyone, they held their
fire.
Sylvara slipped neatly down into their formation, and as the guy who’d had his
gun knocked away bent down to pick it up, she casually plucked the badge off his shoulder as he passed by.
Then, she stood there just like every other Second Academy cadet, eyes locked straight ahead- only she had one massive advantage-her mental energy. With that, her sight and hearing beat every single person here, hands down.
Agares had been chasing her this whole time. They weren’t that far apart. Less than two minutes after they settled into position, Sylvara was the first one to spot his approach.
She jabbed her finger forward, voice crisp, bright, and commanding. “Off to the front-right- indiscriminate fire, indiscriminate fire!”

The flicker of a moving shadow–the snap of breaking branches-was all it took for the fifty- man Second Academy squad to start pulling their triggers and laying down a full sweep.
For a moment, it was nothing but gunfire.
