Chapter 168 Execute the Plan

Finished

Everyone went quiet. The only sound was their breathing as they thought through the plan.

Veyric broke the silence. “Why make it complicated? We could just kill him and call it a day.”

Every head turned toward him. A brief pause hung between them before they all lifted their thumbs in sync. “You’ve really gone for it, man. We were just talking about taking him down, and you’re already at murder.”

Veyric scratched his head and gave a sheepish grin. “Feywin always said shoot for the stars and you fall on the moon at least.”

The group nodded together. “Yeah, you’re right. Everyone needs a dream.”

And taking out the Commander? That was the dream to top them all.

The tension sparked like a fire, and Sylvara fanned it. Her energy stretched out across the distance, quiet but sharp, and she sensed Agares closing in fast.

She turned to the men. “Mr. Vaelor’s got maybe two minutes before he finds us.

“Also, that seventy-man team from the Fifth Military Academy? They’re on their way here too. What’s the move?”

Carlos grinned as an idea hit him. “Let’s play him. We stay on his side for now, help him fight the enemy, pick up the nameplates, and act loyal.

“Then, when the time’s right, we turn on him and finish the job. Sound good?”

The response came all at once, loud and fierce. “Deal!”

Sylvara’s lips curved into a sly smile. Her bargain-bin husband’s men were just too damn endearing. She decided right then that she’d treat every single one of them to a mountain of candies later.

After they sealed the plan, the group climbed out from behind the slope and pushed west again.

Their target was the seventy-man team of veteran students and instructors from the Fifth Military Academy.

About seven minutes later, they spotted them.

There were a little over thirty of Sylvara’s men, and dressed in the instructors’ and Fifth Academy’s uniforms, they melted right into the team without a single person noticing.

Academy came marching in from the west.

Sylvara was already planning how to lure all eighty soldiers toward Agares when a man from the smaller group, his face streaked with camo paint, broke into a sprint straight toward her. Zephyrion’s voice burst out, thrilled beyond reason. “Sylvara! Is that you?”

A familiar pain in the ass, right on cuc.

Sylvara didn’t hesitate. She tightened her fist and drove it straight into his face. The hit landed hard, dropping him to the ground with a dull thud. She planted her boot squarely on his back and said coldly, “This is a battlefield, not some damn social club. Who the hell do you think you are, running up to girls mid-combat?”

Her face was hidden under layers of paint, her uniform loose and ill-fitting, yet somehow this idiot still recognized her.

Did he think he had x-ray vision or something?

Zephyrion grunted under her boot, trying to lift himself, but she pressed down harder. He couldn’t even get leverage, let alone tap into his mental energy.

To everyone else watching, it looked like a Mecha Department sophomore had tried flirting with a girl from his own academy and got instantly knocked out cold for it.

“Sy-”

“Shut the fuck up!” Veyric barked, kicking Zephyrion in the rear. The crack of the blow echoed across the clearing. “You want your face ripped off? You mutt, this is training ground war. We’re all here to take down the biggest player-Mr. Vaelor himself-and you’re out here playing friendly?” The instructor uniform gave him leverage to use.

Sylvie had told them not to call her name. If this fool slipped up and dragged her into trouble with that name, there would be hell to pay.

“Exactly,” Leiya said, stepping forward and driving her boot into Zephyrion’s left calf. “Students get dumber every year. Military training is no playground. Drop your guard once, and you’re dead. Yet here you are, flirting mid-fight. Real brave, aren’t you?”

He was a liability, one that could blow their cover if left unchecked.

Zolensky followed next, slamming a kick into Zephyrion’s other leg. “Where’d this garbage even come from? Didn’t your instructors teach you that there are only enemies and allies in a battle? No one cares about your girl!”

Zephyrion screamed through clenched teeth, too broken to string words together.
