“Sylvara, let me spell it out. A Plant Department worker is not always a healer. Only someone with Plant Department mental energy above Level 5 can do real repairs.

“A Level 7 does it even better. Troya is the only one who reached toward Level 8. He is one hundred forty-five. He disappeared. No one has seen him since.

“We have spent three thousand years picking genes and shaping children. We built kids that looked the way we wanted. We even picked their intelligence.

“When a child was wrong, we erased them. That is how we made perfect children. Then God punished us. Every child from the breeding center has broken genes. The collapse speeds up each day.

“Our families reach one hundred fifty or two hundred years, but they never die clean deaths. They die while their genes burn out. The suffering is awful. Their bodies look terrifying.

“This is why we hunt for a healer who can repair genetic breakdown. We also want a child born the natural way again.

“A natural birth makes a baby with steady genes. A natural birth makes a real person. We are not real people.”

He dragged it right back to babies again.

He always did this.

At least her bargain-bin husband could not have a child.

Sylvara lifted a hand. “I want to ask something.”

Aslan threw a grape into his mouth. “It does not matter. A prince’s wife is worth less than a Level 7 healer. His Highness ignoring you is normal.”

Her jaw tightened. That wasn’t my fucking question.

She wanted to throw something at him. Sylvara focused on him. “I want to know what Troya Empire plans to do if the Level 7 healer really leaves for the Federation.”

Aslan answered fast. “Troya has not seen someone like that in years. If he tries to run to the Federation, I know His Highness Agares will hunt him. He will take his head.

“He will drag that body into a lab. He will cut it open. He will pull the mental energy out before the healer dies. Then he will store it. The Empire will show everyone what happens when you betray Troya.”

The chill crawled down her spine.

Sylvara trembled. She needed to keep her secret tight, or her bargain-bin husband would twist her head off and toss her into a lab.

Aslan swallowed the grape. He tapped her shoulder. His voice dropped. “Sweetheart, if you know that healer, warn him. Tell him to stay out of the Federation.

“Tell him to go to His Highness Agares. His Highness will speak to His Majesty. His Majesty will treat him with honor. He will become Troya’s top healer. That rank sits right under the prince.”

Sylvara gave a slow “oh.” She said, “You tasted that grape. How did you recognize mental energy? What else did you study besides Agriculture Department work?”

“Healing Department.” Aslan flashed a sharp grin. His pretty face lit up with pride. “I forgot to tell you. I am Plant Department Level 4. I grow plants, and I heal people.”

Agares stood inside the Fifth Sector space station. He checked every ship on the dock. He found nothing strange.

Five minutes before he gave the final order, one ship flew out. The ship carried over one hundred passengers.

No one on that list looked like a Level 7 Plant Department healer.

Carlos watched his commander stand there like a storm made of ice. Agares looked dangerous. Carlos remembered the stupid things he had said earlier. His knees turned weak.

Auren came out of the lab. He spoke to Agares. “Commander, we tested four plant samples. The results show the fruit slows genetic breakdown. The results also show it can repair damaged

genes.

“But it needs long-term use. You need to keep the plants close. That makes the effect stronger.”

Agares stepped into the lab. He stared at the four pots on the table. Green leaves spilled over the edges. Fruit weighed down the branches. His voice hit the room like steel. “Send word. Find the Level 7 Plant Department healer. Keep it quiet. You cannot push him. You cannot reveal him.”
