Chapter 41
Ebony
Seeing Mama like this isn’t something I ever thought I’d see. Her usual dark coat looks sticky and matted, her paws are limp and dirty, and her flank is moving up and down rapidly. She hardly looks like Mama now and her scent is masked by blood and medical supplies.
Mama always keeps herself groomed and proper. She’s one of my calming anchors in times of need. She’s serious a lot but never misses the chance to smile and take care of me.
Now sitting by her while she lays limply in a bed not her own, Mama doesn’t seem like Mama anymore. We can’t go home right now so we’re staying in the Royal pack’s mansion. It would be great if it wasn’t for what happened to Mama and Sky.
Suddenly tired and nervous, I look down at my lap. Doctor Olivia doesn’t know when Mama is going to wake up so all the questions everyone wanted to ask her came onto me. So many at once to the point that my ears start to ring now just thinking about it.
“What happened?” “Who attacked you guys?” “Was there more than one wolf?” “Who took Skylar?” “Did you get a good look at them?” “Why can’t you tell us anything?” “What are you hiding?!”
Over and over the same questions were asked of me. My anxiety only got worse as I found myself unable to ask any of them well enough to satisfy everyone. One even said “Must be from her rouge bloodline” which only made my panic even worse. Please leave me alone!
“Everyone stop scaring the poor girl!” Doctor Olivia had snapped at everyone. “Leave her alone! When she’s calmed down and ready, she can help you better. Now go!” Once everyone left, she looked at me with a comforting smile. “Just relax… it’s ok not to remember it all. It’s normal. Get some rest.” With that, she left me alone.
That’s right. I don’t completely remember what happened. All I can see is a pair of wild dark gold eyes and Sky’s back as he hides me behind him. I know it was a lady who took Sky away but many of the most important details aren’t there.
“Why is she like this?” Luna Daisy had asked doctor Olivia. “Did she hit her head? Is she going to be alright?” Instead of being mad at me like everyone else, she was worried about my health. I figured she would be because of Sky and yet she isn’t.
“Sometimes our brains try to protect us from traumatic events as a coping mechanism.” The doctor explains. “Ebony could remember soon but if she’s under distress then it makes things even worse. For now, patience is key.”
With that, no one else bothered me. Luna Daisy left to see how things were going leaving me alone with Mama. The silence weighs heavy in the air and I find myself missing Sky’s constant teasing.
Me, the next Luna? His mate? Sky always says the weirdest things and it only makes me feel funny and nervous. I can’t be like Luna Daisy. I’m not strong or tough! I’m not like Mama either.
I pet her fur and whimper softly. “Mama… what do I do? Please wake up…” I sniffle and rub my eyes. “Why can’t I remember? I wanna help Sky… so why can’t I? Please, Mama… I need your help…” I cover my face. “You remember everything right? You can help Sky come home… please…”
Mama doesn’t stir though. I lay down next to her and curl up into a ball as I start to sob again. I’m lost without my best friend or Mama. What can I do? Why can’t I remember? I hide my face and continue to cry. Before I know it, I doze off.
I find myself in the woods again but everything looks off. The trees around us are yellow and the sky is red with no moons or stars. I feel myself panicking and my mouth moves on its own as I complain to someone. Hearing a small laugh, a figure materializes in front of me and I recognize him immediately: Sky.
A cheeky grin is on his face and he laughs as he teases me yet again. His hazel eyes sparkle happily and his dark brown hair blows in the breeze. Then his face falls as we hear the sound of crunching leaves.

He spins around and in front of us appears a huge monstrous woman. Her eyes are a wild dark gold and just the image of her sends chills down my spine.
Mama growls lowly and appears in front of us in her wolf form. ‘Back off! Get away if you know what’s good for you!’ She snarls to the monster and fear runs through me at its shrill laughter.
“You think you can do anything to me? How funny… I’m only here to take my pup back.” A moment later the monster is replaced with a giant wolf. Its teeth are huge and green and its fur looks yellow like the trees around us. ‘And I won’t take no for an answer.’
The giant wolf jumps forward and panic runs through my body. Just then Mama makes her move and slaps her away. ‘RUN! Get help!’ She snarls at us.
Sky grabs my arm and we take off the opposite way. The trees all look the same and I flinch as Mama whines in pain the sound echoing in my ears. No! I want to look back but I also feel the hot breath of the wild giant behind us. She’s so close!
Then I find myself falling down a hill. Sky hugs me close as we roll down it but then I hear a loud crack. I sit up and see Sky limp and in a daze staring up at the redness above us. At the same time, the yellow grass around his head starts to turn a dark crimson.
