"Do doctors like you, who have a history of misconduct, only care about accepting gifts? You're not treating your patients seriously at all!" said the woman.
Adrain looked terribly upset as he asked, "What's going on, Dr. Sterling? How could you accept gifts from your patient's family?"
Emily leaned back in her chair, calmly watching the drama unfold before her eyes. She looked up slowly and asked, "How much is that bag of local treats worth?"
The woman was stunned at first, but she immediately shouted, "Three hundred dollars! We'd saved up to buy them for you!"
Emily looked at Adrain and curled her lips into a sneer. She said, "I didn't accept any gifts, Dr. Strebelle. I paid for that bag of treats."
She paused. Then, in a voice that wasn't loud but enough to echo throughout the room, she said, "Five hundred dollars. And it's under the patient's pillow."
Color drained from that woman's face. "N-nonsense! It's not there at all!"
Emily got up and stared right at her face with an icy gaze. "We can find out whether it's there or not by walking over," she said, turning around to leave.
Adrain looked upset and caught up to her.
Meanwhile, the woman was left frozen in place, looking ashen.
At last, she still bit the bullet and followed them while the crowd watched.
The doctor and nurses who'd wanted to join in the fun immediately parted to make way for her in the hallway.
The patient was lying in bed in the VIP room, looking lost.
Emily walked up to the bed, sticking a hand under the patient's pillow. Sure enough, the money was neatly arranged under the pillow.
The room fell silent. Then, suppressed gasps rang out from the crowd.
The woman's face turned even paler than before.
Adrain reacted very quickly and immediately started dispersing the crowd. "It's a misunderstanding. It's all a misunderstanding. You may leave now. Don't disturb the patient's rest," he said.
