The seconds ticked by as Mallory sat in her office in the municipal hospital.
She couldn't sit still and kept looking at her phone every few minutes. She had left the screen idling on her chat with Emily, but her messages remained unanswered.
Almost ten hours had passed since she'd sent the first message in the morning. It was as if Emily had disappeared from the face of the earth going by the way she had gone radio silent.
Emily was a workaholic, so there was no way that she would be unreachable for so long unless she was in trouble or in danger.
Mallory couldn't shake the feeling that Gabriel was connected to Emily's disappearance. He must have done something to her.
Soon, Mallory decided that she couldn't just sit by and do nothing anymore. So, she grabbed her keys and coat from her desk and rushed out of her office.
She was going to go crazy if she just continued to wait. She had to do something.
…
Half an hour later, Mallory arrived at the police station and told the police officer on duty a summarized version of what had happened.
"My friend, Emily Sterling, the head of cardiac surgery in the municipal hospital, has been unreachable since this morning. Her phone is in a no signal zone, and the last person she made contact with was probably her husband, Gabriel Holton, the president of Holton Corporation.
"I seriously suspect that her freedom has been restricted, and something terrible might have happened to her."
The police officer looked a little troubled as he listened to Mallory. "Miss, we can only start an investigation if your friend has been missing for 24 hours—"
"Her life is at stake here!" Mallory exclaimed, interrupting the officer. "It might be too late if we wait for 24 hours to pass!" Her emotions were running high, so her voice was naturally raised.
Still, Mallory forced herself to calm down and added, "Gabriel has a private villa halfway up the mountain. It's located in a secluded area without any signal, and there's a high chance that Emily was taken there.
"Please. No matter what you have to do, I need you to check the villa and ensure that she's safe."
The police officer's expression turned serious when he heard Gabriel's name and saw how anxious yet determined Mallory looked.
When he ran a search and discovered that the last known location of Emily's phone signal was indeed near the villa, he finally agreed to send a team to check it out.
…
The police cars were in the lead as they drove up the mountain path. Meanwhile, Mallory stuck close behind them, feeling like her heart had leapt into her throat.
The higher they traversed up the mountain, the more remote their surroundings became. The trees around them also seemed more eerie. The area they were in was practically a natural cage.
Mallory couldn't help but think about how much of a bastard Gabriel was. Emily must have felt so hopeless and scared being trapped in a place like this.
She wouldn't forgive Gabriel if anything happened to Emily.
Soon, the cars finally came to a stop in front of the villa.
The metal gate was sealed tightly, and a dead silence descended around their surroundings.
