Emily took a sip from her cup of warm water and looked at the vast sky beyond her window. "He's been quite well-behaved for the past few days."
Mallory scoffed. "That's Gabriel's usual modus operandi. He'll pretend to concede to get you to lower your guard while hatching up a heinous plan to get what he wants!" she angrily exclaimed.
"But this arrangement has its pros too. Now, you can finally catch your breath. Whatever you do, just don't get soft on him and simply ignore him! He needs to learn that he can't boss around independent women like us however he pleases."
A light smile tugged at Emily's lips. She had lost the luxury of being soft-hearted a long time ago anyway. "I know.
"Oh, that's right. Didn't you mention that a patient in your department didn't have enough money to pay for their surgery bills? How's that going?"
Mallory's tone was colored with excitement when she replied, "Everything's settled now! Do you want to guess how?
"The hospital's charity foundation received a huge anonymous donation yesterday! The donor stated that they wanted to sponsor all the poor patients in our department.
"Now, not only do we have enough money to fund the patient's surgery, but we also have enough to fund patients after him! The anonymous donor must be an angel sent from heaven."
Emily's hand tightened around her cup slightly. She couldn't help but think about Gabriel's cold and handsome face when she heard the words "anonymous donation."
Could he be the anonymous donor?
But she swiftly snuffed out the idea. After all, Gabriel had already agreed to not get involved in her life, so it must just be a coincidence. Perhaps she should stop trying to connect everything that happened around her to him.
"That's good," she said, suppressing her chaotic thoughts. She felt genuinely happy for the children.
After hanging up on the call, Emily returned to her study. She then turned on her computer and began to look through the newest medical journal, enjoying her newfound peace and quiet.
…
Gabriel had just ended an international video conference.
The blond and blue-eyed man on the screen politely reported his findings to him.
"We've concluded our investigations, Mr. Holton. Ms. Sterling made zero mistakes and received zero complaints for all the cases that she handled when she was interning at St. Jude Hospital. Her instructor's comment about her was 'a genius that comes along only once a century.'
"We also discovered that another intern that was in the same batch as her was jealous of her and tried to falsify a medical record and pin the blame on her. However, the instructor discovered her ruse in time and fired her from the program.
It was the invoice for the newest batch of medical equipment that was to be sent to the municipal hospital. "Anonymous" was written in the section that should have been filled in with the donor's name.
…
Amelia gave the court worker who was monitoring her a slip, then she headed to Holton Corporation.
Since Gabriel was determined to make her life difficult, she was going to drag everyone into the pits of hell with her.
She snuck into her previous office and turned on her personal computer.
She still had a trump card up her sleeve.
When she was working as Gabriel's secretary, she had come up with a contingency plan. She had taken advantage of her position to create a backdoor program that allowed her to remotely access some of the company's servers.
Her plan had only been to leave another escape route for herself should things go awry. But she'd never expected it to become her only chance of survival at that moment.
