Amelia was going to steal Holton Corporation's business secrets and use them to threaten Gabriel. She was going to force him to remove all her restrictions and let her leave in peace. She was also going to force him to give her enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life.
Amelia's computer dinged when the progress bar on the screen reached 100%. The download was complete.
A twisted smile stretched across her face.
…
At the same time, Gabriel's lips also twitched up into a smile. He was sitting at his desk as he picked up the internal phone and said, "She took the bait. Get her."
…
Amelia felt like she could already see the image of Gabriel conceding to her. She even started fantasizing about the lavish lifestyles she would lead once she got the money from him.
But suddenly, the apartment door was kicked open with a deafening slam. Then, several uniformed police officers swarmed in. Roman was among them, wearing an icy expression as he entered the office.
The officer leading the group brandished the arrest warrant at Amelia and said, "Amelia Waverly, we have conclusive evidence to prove that you've been stealing trade secrets. You need to come with us to the station."
The joy on Amelia's face immediately faded. She whipped her head around to look at her computer screen, then at the "Download Complete" notification that suddenly seemed so bright and blinding.
It had been a trap all along. Gabriel had guessed from the start that she was going to steal Holton Corporation's business secrets.
It turned out that all of her struggles were nothing but one huge comedy act to him.
"No!" Amelia shrieked as if she had lost her mind.
She tried to destroy the computer but was stopped in her tracks by two police officers. They lunged at her and pinned her hands behind her back. Then, the handcuffs were locked around her wrists in a resounding click.
"It wasn't me! Gabriel's framing me!" she cried as she struggled wildly.
But Roman simply gave her a cold look as she was dragged away.
After disconnecting the call, Gabriel slowly leaned back against his chair.
He raised his hand and pinched the throbbing spot between his brows. A faraway memory had floated unbidden to the forefront of his thoughts when Roman mentioned that Amelia had been apprehended by the police.
He couldn't deny that she had put her own life on the line to save him when they were children. So, he'd refrained from immediately disposing of her out of gratitude for her having saved his life in the past.
This decision was his last act of kindness to her, and it was also his last warning.
…
A few days later at the municipal hospital, Emily had just exited the operating room when she heard a few nurses talking among themselves in hushed tones at the nurses' station.
"Did you hear about Ms. Waverly resigning from Holton Corporation?"
"What do you mean she resigned? According to my cousin, she committed a terrible mistake and was booted out of the company by the president!"
