"I heard that too!" one of the nurses exclaimed. "Apparently, she was caught red-handed stealing the company's business secrets to sell to a rival company. What she did was considered a commercial crime, so it's likely that she'll be punished by the law for her transgressions."
"What do you mean she'll be punished? You're not caught up on the latest development, are you? The newest update is that Mr. Waverly Senior personally begged Mr. Holton to go easy on her.
"In the end, Mr. Holton just sent her back to the Waverly residence and placed her under house arrest because of their relationship."
"Is that so? I didn't know Mr. Holton could be so… soft-hearted."
"I guess the rumor of Ms. Waverly being Mr. Holton's first love is true after all."
Emily could no longer register anything else the nurses were saying. She was rooted to the spot, as if she had been struck by lightning.
Gabriel had let Amelia off the hook once again because of the relationship they shared. He had once again gone easy on her despite her scheming to fake a medical incident to ruin her career, and despite how she had tried to steal Holton Corporation's business secrets.
It became crystal clear to Emily that, in Gabriel's heart, her innocence, career, and dignity could not compare to Amelia's identity as his savior.
It was ridiculous.
As Mallory exited the breakroom while carrying two cups of water, she noticed Emily standing in the hallway. Her face was as pale as a sheet.
"Mills, what's wrong? Why do you look so upset?"
Emily slowly returned to her senses. Then, she lifted her eyes to look at Mallory, her lips stretching into a smile that looked more like a grimace. "Mal, I feel like I've just woken up from a very long and very foolish dream."
She felt utterly pathetic now that she had awoken from the dream.
Mallory felt like her heart was breaking as she looked at Emily. She placed the cups down and lightly hugged her. "It's okay. Everything's over now."
Emily didn't say a word and simply buried her face into Mallory's shoulder.
She wasn't feeling sad because of Gabriel. She felt sad for her past self who had foolishly clung on to her unrealistic delusions.
Emily slowly pushed Mallory away and wiped her tears. When she looked up again, her eyes were devoid of emotion once more. "I'm alright," she said with a smile. Then, she said, "Isn't our department missing a doctor to provide long-term aid in the remote areas of the country?"
Mallory was stunned by her question. "Yes. The work period lasts for half a year, but the working conditions are quite tough. Why are you suddenly asking about this?"
"Can you help me put my name on the list? I'd like to have a change of scenery," Emily lightly said.
…
That afternoon, Emily dragged her exhausted body out of the operating room after her shift was over.
She was about to drop by Jenna's place to check on her condition when a familiar black Bentley suddenly barged into her line of sight in the parking lot.
The car door swung open as Gabriel got out of the driver's seat. He was dressed in a tailored set of casual wear, which made him look a little less dominating than when he was conducting business.
Gabriel made a good point—even if he was just hiding his own selfishness under the guise of caring for Jenna.
In the end, Emily accepted his offer and treated it as getting a free ride.
Soon, she averted her gaze as she let go of the car door's handle.
In that instant, Gabriel's heart returned to its original position in his chest, and he breathed a sigh of relief.
With that, Emily circled his car, opened the door, and slid into the front passenger's seat.
…
They spent the entire car ride in silence.
Soon, they arrived at Damien's home that was located in an old area of the city. They got out of the car, one after the other.
Damien was already waiting for them at the entrance of the building. He enthusiastically greeted them, "Mr. Holton! Dr. Sterling! You're here!"
His gaze alternated between the both of them before a wide smile appeared on his face. "Go ahead and go upstairs. Mom has been talking about the two of you for several days now."
Upon hearing this, the ghost of a smile played on Gabriel's lips.
