Gabriel turned his head to look at Emily's reaction, but Emily didn't even bother looking at him and simply politely nodded at Damien.
Jenna's home was neat and tidy.
A smile bloomed on her face when she spotted Emily. "Dr. Sterling, you're here!" She enthusiastically grabbed Emily's hand and urged her to sit down next to her bed. "Please have a seat. You must be exhausted from the journey here."
"I'm not tired, Mrs. Anderson." Emily said, a small smile finally appearing on her face. "How have you been feeling recently? Has your heart experienced any discomfort?" she asked as she took out a stethoscope.
Meanwhile, Gabriel was standing to the side.
"You're recovering well, Mrs. Anderson, so you don't have to worry," Emily said as she stored the stethoscope away again.
She shot a comforting smile in Jenna's direction before continuing, "You still have to watch your diet for now. You need to cut back on salty and fatty foods, and you definitely shouldn't eat pickled foods anymore."
Jenna was all smiles when she replied, "I'll definitely listen to everything you say!" She then turned to look at Gabriel, who had remained quiet during the entire exchange. "Have a seat too, Mr. Holton. Don't just stand there. Ms. Sterling is so lucky to have such a wonderful husband like you by her side."
Instantly, the smile on Emily's face stiffened, and she subconsciously curled her hands into tight fists.
Meanwhile, Gabriel felt as if his heart had leapt into his throat. He was terrified that Emily would speak up and correct Jenna.
But surprisingly, she did no such thing. Instead, she simply lowered her eyes, her long lashes hiding the emotions she was feeling at that moment.
"Rest well, Mrs. Anderson. I'll visit you again next time. I have other business to attend to now, so I'll take my leave."
…
Emily had just returned to the hospital when Robert once again barged out of nowhere and blocked her path.
He looked much more haggard now compared to before. There was even stubble growing on his chin and dark circles under his eyes.
Mallory, who had arrived to welcome Emily back to the hospital, immediately lost her temper when she spotted Robert.
She stepped forward and shielded Emily behind her. "What are you doing here?" she demanded. "Stop haunting her like a ghost, Robert!"
Mallory's sharp and high-pitched voice drew the attention of the passersby around them.
Robert's gaze ended up landing on Emily. He knew that he was the one in the wrong.
He began, "Mills, I'm sorry—"
"Get lost!" Mallory exclaimed, ruthlessly interrupting him. "Your apologies are worth less than trash! Get out of our sights right now!"
Emily gently tugged at Mallory, whose emotions were obviously running high. She then walked out from behind her and calmly looked at Robert. "We don't have anything to do with each other anymore, Robert."
…
Emily returned to her office and swiftly prepared the documents she needed before heading over to Adrain's office.
She knocked on his door.
Adrain enthusiastically greeted her, saying, "Dr. Sterling, please come in."
Emily handed the documents to him. "Dr. Strebelle, I would like to apply for the Ritzland exchange program."
The smile on Adrain's face stiffened. He frowned as he took the application form and scanned through it.
He had personally helped Emily to get to the position that she was in now. Not only was she the youngest cardiac surgeon with the most potential in the hospital, but she was also the person that the hospital's new boss, Gabriel, cared about the most.
Although no one had openly commented on it, ever since Holton Corporation acquired the hospital, they had continuously donated state of the art medical equipment to the hospital while also pumping resources into the department of cardiothoracic surgery.
Adrain had been a part of society for decades at that point, so naturally, he was able to tell what was going on—Gabriel had acquired the hospital because he wanted to support Emily.
It was also why he didn't know how to react now that Emily wanted to leave for six months.
Unable to afford making any rash decisions, he placed the documents down before looking at Emily with a bright smile, saying, "This is quite sudden, Dr. Sterling."
