Upon noticing Emily's growing suspicion, Adrain chuckled as he patted her shoulder. "Don't overthink things, Dr. Sterling. Both of you are being sent to Ritzland because the hospital has acknowledged your capabilities.
"You should start preparing the materials that you need. You'll be departing next week."
Emily suppressed the suspicions in her mind and nodded.
It didn't matter what Gabriel's goal was. After all, it didn't change the fact that the exchange program was her opportunity to leave the country, and she couldn't afford to let it slip through her fingers.
…
After her shift ended, Emily returned to her apartment and dragged out her suitcase from deep in the cloakroom. It had been a long time since she'd used it.
She opened the suitcase and quietly began to pack her things.
…
At the Waverly residence in the suburbs, a few bodyguards clad in black emotionlessly stood guard outside a door. They were to ensure that the person locked within the room was prevented from making contact with the outside world.
Meanwhile, Amelia smashed an expensive porcelain mug on the floor, causing the shattered pieces to ricochet in all directions.
Her chest was violently heaving.
How dare Gabriel put her under house arrest?
Amelia's mother, Jessica Johnson, was scared out of her wits as she stood to the side. Her father, Aaron Waverly, descended the stairs and roared, "Are you done with your antics now?"
Amelia's eyes were red, and she looked incredibly upset. "Why would Gabe do this to me, Dad? He locked me up because of that woman!"
Aaron's face was as dark as coal. "There's nothing we can do about it. No one dares defy Mr. Holton's orders." He paused and lowered his voice before continuing, "I just received news that he and Emily are going to Ritzland."
"What?" The color drained from Amelia's face in an instant. She couldn't believe that Gabriel was going to Ritzland with Emily.
What right did Emily have to make Gabriel trail after her like that? Why had Amelia herself worked so hard only to watch them leave her behind in the dust?
Amelia refused to allow such a thing to happen.
She knew that Emily cared deeply about her family despite how greedy and useless her father and brother were respectively.
Very soon, a wicked smile stretched across Amelia's lips. She raised her head and looked at Aaron. "Dad, did Holton Corporation cut off our company's funding?"
Aaron's expression turned even more upset.
Not only did Holton Corporation cut off their funding, but they also suspended several of their projects. On top of that, the banks were hounding them to pay their debts. The Waverly family was on the brink of falling apart.
Amelia walked over to Aaron and said in a soft but dangerous voice, "Dad, you don't want the Waverly family to go down like this, right? All our problems will be solved once I marry Gabe.
"The only person standing in my way right now is Emily. I'll still have a chance as long as she isn't able to go to Ritzland."
Emily closed her suitcase with a resounding snap. Her eyes were glacial when she turned around. "Did you run out of money?"
It only took a single question from her to shatter Maurice's disguise. His face turned a ruddy red, and his embarrassment morphed into fury. "What are you saying? I'm your father! Am I wrong for caring about you?
"What will our family do when you're so far away? What will Cole do? Who's going to maintain our relationship with Mr. Holton when you're gone?" Maurice finally revealed his actual purpose for visiting her.
Emily felt like her heart had been plunged into a freezing pool of water and was slowly sinking to the bottom.
Upon seeing that she had fallen silent, Maurice assumed that his words had left an impression on her. So, his tone became even more self-righteous.
His eyes were pinned on the exchange program invitation that was lying on the coffee table. Immediately, he lunged at it and snatched it up before ripping it to shreds.
The sound of paper being torn apart was especially piercing in the quiet living room.
Maurice then straightened to his full height and tried to enforce his authority as a father. "I'm your father. You're not allowed to go anywhere without my permission!"
He turned around, looking like he wanted to lock the door. "You have no choice but to stay here until I allow you to leave."
Emily smiled.
Did he really just refer to himself as her father?
