David scooped Ella up and carried her straight to his Rolls-Royce, settling her gently in the passenger seat before sliding in behind the wheel himself.
His hands—big, strong, and sure—rested on the steering wheel. With a smooth press of the gas, the car glided down the road, steady and swift.
Ella was wrapped up in his coat, completely surrounded by his clean, crisp scent and the warmth of his body. Her nose was pink from the cold, and her heart fluttered with emotions she couldn’t quite name. She honestly never thought he’d show up.
He hadn’t come for her back then. But now, he was here.
She turned to look at his profile, sharp and handsome. “Thank you,” she said softly.
David’s fingers tightened on the wheel. His jaw was set, his voice low. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I…” Ella started, faltering.
“I asked you so many times. Why didn’t you say anything? Do you have any idea what could have happened if I’d been late today?” His voice was cold, almost harsh.
Ella felt the heat of his anger. Her eyes filled with tears, turning glassy and red. “Why are you getting mad at me?”
David glanced over at her, caught off guard. She looked like she was about to cry. And somehow, she was the one feeling hurt? How did that make sense? He’d seen what happened—her clothes torn, that creep on top of her. If he’d been even a minute later…
But right now, seeing her looking so upset, he couldn’t even bring himself to stay angry. He was scared he’d make her cry for real.
David reached over and turned on the heat, adjusting the temperature. “Are you still cold?”
Ella shook her head. “I’m fine now.”
“Ella,” David said suddenly.
Ella nodded. She didn’t mind at all.
The place was simple, nothing like a fancy hotel, but it was clean. The innkeeper’s eyes instantly lit up when she saw David, who was tall, broad-shouldered, just oozing that calm, powerful energy. “Well, hello there, handsome. Are you looking for a room? Just for yourself?”
Ella couldn’t help but notice. No matter where David went, he always caught people’s attention. Even in just a shirt and slacks, he looked like he’d walked straight out of a magazine. That businesslike confidence of his had the innkeeper completely spellbound.
David’s face stayed calm, like this happened all the time. “One room, for me and my wife.”
As soon as he said it, Ella stepped forward. She’d been hidden behind him, and now she offered the innkeeper a small, sweet smile.
The innkeeper was a little disappointed at first, but when she saw Ella’s delicate features and that bright, genuine smile, she perked up again. They really did look perfect together.
She handed David the room key. “You’re in 503. Anything on the nightstand is for sale, and the prices are listed.”
