With one sharp pull, Ella’s collar tore open, exposing a sweep of soft skin to the cold air.

Her mind spiraled back in time. Years ago, in a cave just like this one, she’d been trapped under Mike’s weight. The stink of him had pressed down on her, and the helplessness, the fear, it had all felt like drowning. Back then, she’d really believed she was going to die.

Even as a scared, desperate girl, her thoughts had gone to Davy. Where was he? Why hadn’t he come for her?

Now, the years had passed, but nothing had changed. Mike’s weight was crushing her again, and as she squeezed her eyes shut, all she could think about was David. Still, after all this time, she was hoping for him. Maybe she’d grown up, maybe she hadn’t at all. Either way, she knew the truth. He was never coming.

Ella’s hand moved to her waist, searching for anything, a last defense. Suddenly, a foot slammed in from nowhere. The pressure vanished. Mike was kicked off her so hard he crashed into the cave wall, hitting with a sickening thud and spitting blood onto the ground.

For a heartbeat, Ella froze. When she dared to look up, a familiar, striking face filled her sight.

David.

He was really here. The man she’d just been thinking about was suddenly standing before her, as if he’d stepped straight out of her memory and into the dim cave. Ella stared, lost, barely able to believe it.

David wore a thin black coat, his face unreadable, his shoulders dusted with cold dew, looking like he’d fought through hell to get here. There was something almost unreal about him, like an avenging angel dropped from the sky.

How had he found her?

He looked down at her, and saw the pain in her eyes. They were red and watery, her whole body trembling. She hadn’t dared to hope he’d come. She hadn’t even let herself imagine it.

David’s jaw tightened. He shrugged off his coat and wrapped it around her trembling shoulders, his voice low and steady. “It’s alright. You’re safe now.”
