The sounds from next door just kept going, getting louder and wilder. There was no way he could sleep through this.
David raised his hand and knocked hard on the wall. Two sharp thuds. The noise next door instantly dropped to a hush.
He closed his eyes, but sleep wouldn’t come. Not with his body so tense, not with Ella lying right there beside him, all soft warmth and sweet scent. His mind wandered back to that night at Briarwood Estate, in the master bedroom, when he’d pinned her against the wall and held her hands tight...
Suddenly, the noises from next door started up again.
David’s eyes flew open. Annoyed, he sat up and threw off the covers, ready to get out of bed.
But then a small hand caught his sleeve.
He turned to see Ella peeking out from under the blankets. Her bare face was flushed, her skin pale with a hint of pink from the heat. Her eyes were wide and shining, so innocent he almost wanted to bite her.
She held onto his sleeve. “Where are you going?” Her voice was small and worried.
She knew he was mad, and it really seemed like he might go next door and start a fight.
She’d seen him get physical for the first time today, back in the cave. She never expected someone as refined as him to be so fierce. She really didn’t like seeing him fight.
He’d seemed down all day. Was it because she’d wasted his time?
She’d already figured it out. He only came to save her because, on paper, she was still Mrs. Harmon. There’s no way he’d just leave her behind. He was a good guy, after all.
Looking at her curled up in bed, so young and fragile, David felt his throat burn, like he’d swallowed fire. He quickly pulled his sleeve free. “Go to sleep.”
And then he left the room.
…
David didn’t hesitate. He knocked on the next door over, loud and clear. A young man’s voice came from inside. “Who’s there? I’m coming.”
