Jessa actually invited her out for coffee.
Ella didn’t reply right away. Jessa’s tone was playful, almost mocking. “What’s the matter, Ella? Nervous? You’ve had a couple of big wins lately, you should be riding high. Or are you scared of me?”
Ella smirked, lips curling with a hint of challenge. “Alright. See you in a bit.”
She hung up, grabbed her purse, and got ready to leave.
Her phone buzzed with a message. It was from Alberto, along with a detailed surgical plan.
“I ran into a tough case last week. If you have time, could you give me some advice?”
Alberto was the president of Central College, and more importantly, her own student. Maureen, who had come out of Central College too, was Alberto’s protégé.
Honestly, Maureen wouldn’t even be her assistant now if Alberto hadn’t recommended her so strongly.
All things considered, these people were like her students and grand-students.
Ella sent a one-word reply. “Okay.”
…
Half an hour later, Ella walked into the café and spotted Jessa right away.
Jessa wasn’t sitting at a table waiting. Instead, she was standing at the top of the stairs, like she’d been expecting her.
Ella walked up, not bothering to hide her impatience. “Jessa, let’s not pretend we’re friends. If you have something to say, just say it.”
Jessa looked absolutely stunning. Crystal heels, a red slip dress, the picture of a prima ballerina. “Congratulations, Ella. You owned that press conference.”
“Thanks,” Ella replied, her voice cool and even.
“But does it really matter? You might have won today, but can you win David?”
Ella met her gaze, silent, waiting.
Jessa’s lips twisted in a half-smile. “And so…”
