This was trouble. The kind you could feel buzzing in the air.
David stretched his long legs and headed out, telling Aiden to get a car ready.
Allie really had him wrapped around her finger. One call from her and he’d drop everything, just like that.
Jessa needed to know who Allie was. Not just know, she wanted to be her best friend. No matter what.
…
Ella and Lilly were still standing by the curb when a Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of them.
The driver hopped out, all crisp uniform and polite smile, and opened the back door. Ella and Lilly slid inside.
Ella’s jaw just about hit the floor. “Lilly, is your cousin loaded or what?”
A Rolls-Royce. David drove one too. Was this car some kind of cheater magnet?
Lilly grinned. “Yeah, he’s got money. Hey, Ella, I should introduce you sometime. You could be my cousin-in-law.”
Wait, what?
Ella shook her head fast. “Thanks, but I’ll pass. Your cousin sounds like way too much for me.”
Lilly just giggled, eyes shining with secrets. If only Ella knew, she already was her cousin-in-law. Her cousin was David Harmon.
…
The next day at Central College.
Ella and Lilly were walking back to their dorm when someone stepped in front of them. “You’re Ella, right? The Sleeping Beauty?”
Ella looked up. Wesley stood there with a bunch of his buddies, blocking their way. He looked her over, eyes lingering in a way that made her skin crawl. “Didn’t expect Sleeping Beauty to be such a babe.”
No luck. Wesley’s friends crowded in, hemming them in tight.
Lilly glared. “Wesley, don’t push it.”
He just laughed, loud and nasty. “Push it? So what if I do? Ella, stop pretending. You’re just some country bumpkin, always sleeping in class. You’re lucky I even notice you.”
He shot a look at Lilly, his words getting even meaner. “Hey, guys, the bumpkin’s mine. You can have the clown. She’s so ugly, no guy would touch her. Consider it a freebie.”
The whole group cracked up, eyes crawling over Ella and Lilly.
Lilly, usually sweet as can be, started shaking with anger. “You…!”
She moved forward, but Ella pulled her behind, standing in front to protect her.
Wesley waved his hand, grinning. “Go on, guys. Get them.”
