“Of course. Didn’t you see Mr. Lynch himself came out to welcome Maureen?”
Everyone stared at Maureen, their faces a mix of admiration and envy.
Maureen walked in with Mr. Lynch, her head held high, looking every bit like a peacock showing off. That confidence, that pride, made her shine.
As they stopped, Maureen’s gaze went straight to Ella. She looked her up and down with obvious disdain, then turned to David. “Mr. Harmon, Ella dropped out of school at sixteen. I’ve even heard she sleeps through Mr. Lynch’s classes. What makes her think she deserves a place at Central College?”
Sarah, happy to have someone backing her up, nodded enthusiastically. “Exactly.”
David’s striking features stayed perfectly calm. He glanced at Ella. “She’ll take her studies seriously while she’s here.”
Sarah looked like she wanted to argue. She’d heard rumors that David himself had asked Mr. Lynch to let Ella in, which was a first for him. He’d never done that for anyone else.
Before Sarah could say anything more, Mr. Lynch stepped in. “Alright, that’s enough. I trust Ella will do well in her studies from now on.”
He had to do his nephew a favor, after all.
Sarah clamped her mouth shut.
Suddenly, Mr. Lynch’s expression brightened. “I have some big news. My mentor, Doctor E, is coming!”
Doctor E? Seriously?
David’s expression shifted. He had already missed meeting Doctor E twice. Was she really coming to Central College this time?
