David stared out the window. Honestly, it was for the best that Ella had brought up the divorce herself. He had been planning to end things too.
“It’ll be soon,” he replied, his tone cool and detached.
…
Back at the apartment, Ella and Fiona walked in. Ella immediately flopped onto her soft bed, sinking into the blankets. After letting loose tonight, it was time to get her life back in order.
She grabbed her phone and opened her messaging app. She had two accounts. For the past three years, she’d only used the one called Mrs. Ella Harmon. Now, that account was officially retired.
Ella logged into her other account. As soon as she did, her group chat, “Happy Family,” exploded with notifications.
She tapped it open.
Otis: “Oh my god, Ella’s finally online again!”
Adam: “Welcome home, Ella.”
Wyatt: “Come here, Ella, let me give you a big hug.”
The chat was flooded with confetti emojis and over-the-top celebrations.
Otis: “Remember three years ago, Ella? You fell in love for the first time, said goodbye to Grandpa, and insisted on leaving to find a man. So, Ella, was it fun playing with men?”
Ella replied, “Not fun at all.”
Adam: “Looks like Ella got her heart broken. Hahaha.”
Wyatt: “There’s actually someone out there you can’t handle? Wow.”
Otis: “You guys, stop teasing her. Just think of it as Ella coming down to earth for a love trial. Sorry, I can’t help it, this is too funny. Let me laugh for a bit.”
…
Harmon Corporation towered over Rockford Bay, a symbol of the city’s power and wealth. The building touched the clouds, even more dazzling at night, lit up like a beacon.
After dropping Jessa off, David went straight to his office. He sat in his black leather chair, going through a pile of documents.
He signed his name at the bottom of the last page, his signature bold and sharp. Behind him, the floor-to-ceiling windows reflected the city’s glowing lights, all of it just the backdrop to his world.
Suddenly, his phone chimed. A message notification.
David picked up his phone. The genius girl had replied.
He read her response, paused for a second, then let out a low laugh, a smirk curling at his lips.
