She had flat-out declined his friend request.
Aiden walked in with a cup of coffee just as David was staring at his phone. He paused, eyebrows shooting up. Had someone actually turned down the boss’ friend request? Was that even possible?
“Sir, this girl… she’s really something,” Aiden said, choosing his words carefully.
David let out a cold laugh. “She is, isn’t she.”
No one had ever rejected him before. She was the first. If she didn’t want to add him, whatever.
He took a sip of coffee and frowned right away.
Aiden immediately noticed. “Is something wrong with the coffee, sir? I can make you a fresh one.”
David found himself missing Ella’s coffee out of nowhere. She always got it just right.
Expression unreadable, David set the cup down. “Write a check with eight zeros. That’s my divorce settlement for Ella.”
She claimed she wanted to leave with nothing, but he didn’t buy it. She’s a girl from the countryside, who’d dropped out of school at sixteen. How was she supposed to support herself? This was just a ploy, a way to squeeze more money from him. The check would be the price of her three years. After that, they’d be done.
Aiden nodded. “Yes, sir.”
Just then, Aiden’s phone rang. He answered and his face lit up. “Sir, good news. Doctor E accepted our case. She’ll do Ms. Irvine’s heart surgery!”
Doctor E was practically a legend. The world’s top doctors looked up to her and billionaires lined up for her appointments. But three years ago, she disappeared. No one knew where she went. Now she was back.
Jessa had struggled with heart problems since she was a kid. She’d even gone through treatments as a child, but nothing had worked. Now, thanks to David’s resources, he’d finally managed to get Doctor E for her.
The worry lines on David’s face eased. He couldn’t help but smile. Jessa had hope now.
…
The next day, Ella arrived at Central Hospital.
Suddenly, a team of bodyguards in black suits swept in, moving with military precision and clearing a path. Ella and everyone else found themselves pushed to the sides.
Two girls nearby whispered to each other. “What’s happening?”
“You haven’t heard? Jessa had a heart issue during rehearsal. David brought her here himself.”
“No wonder it’s such a big scene. David never travels light.”
Ella’s heart skipped. She hadn’t expected to bump into David and Jessa here.
“Look, it’s David and Jessa!”
Ella glanced up and saw David. Tall, striking in a perfectly tailored black suit, he looked every bit the part. Jessa was in his arms, being carried like a princess.
Doctors and nurses gathered around them, almost bowing. “David, this way, please.”
David walked past, carrying Jessa.
