No.
But she wanted to.
Ella tried to pull her wrist away, but David’s hand was unyielding, his grip firm and commanding. Without a word, he started walking, dragging her with him.
“David, what are you doing? Let me go. Where are you taking me?”
His stride was so wide she could barely keep up, stumbling after him as he led her out of the foot spa and straight to his Rolls-Royce parked outside. He practically pushed her into the backseat. Half an hour later, they pulled up in front of the Harmon Corporation building. Before she could protest, he tugged her out of the car and into the lobby.
Tonight, the tech department was working late. A few employees were heading for a coffee break when they caught sight of their usually untouchable CEO, storming in with a girl so dazzling she seemed unreal. Everyone snapped to attention, suddenly wide awake. “Good evening, Mr. Harmon.”
David ignored them completely, pulling Ella along until they disappeared into the CEO’s private office.
The second the door closed, the office buzzed to life. “Was that Mr. Harmon’s wife? She looks like she stepped out of painting.”
Someone managed to snap a quick photo and dropped it into the company group chat. Almost instantly, the messages started flying.
“Is that the same wife who got into a fight at school and made the CEO get called in like a parent during a board meeting?”
“She’s even prettier than Jessa.”
“That’s why she’s Mrs. Harmon and Jessa’s just… well, Jessa.”
“She must be in trouble again. Did you see Mr. Harmon’s face? He looked ready to explode. I bet he’s lecturing her right now.”
“I live for this kind of drama.”
Inside the office, David gave Ella a little shove, sending her stumbling forward. He loosened his tie, the motion rough and impatient. “Ella, talk. I want an explanation.”
She felt a wave of guilt. She honestly had no idea how he’d caught her. Wasn’t he supposed to be having a romantic dinner with Jessa tonight? Why was he here, cornering her instead?
He wrapped his fingers around her neck, his eyes burning. “Ella, are you trying to get me mad?”
She could barely breathe, panic rising in her chest. She started hitting his hand with both fists. “Let go… let go…”
David stared down at her, at that pretty face that managed to turn his whole world upside down, infuriating him to the core. How could she mess with his life like this and still act like she’d done nothing wrong?
His grip tightened. Ella was gasping for air now, her vision blurring. Was he really going to hurt her? She knew he didn’t like her, but had it really come to this?
She didn’t want to die. Desperate, she pushed herself up on her toes and suddenly pressed her lips to his.
David’s entire body froze.
Ella’s lips were soft and warm against his. She kissed him, gentle at first, then deeper, letting her mouth trace the sharp, cool line of his lips, hoping to remind him that she was alive, that she was real, that she was still here.
