Ella opened the message. Her contact, saved as Hubby, had sent a single smiling emoji.
She stared at the screen, mortified. Then she buried her face in her hands and let out a muffled scream. “Oh my god!”
David leaned back in his office chair, watching as Ella’s chat kept blinking with “typing...” for minutes. Every time he thought she’d send something, the screen would go blank, then “typing...” would appear again. Finally, she must have given up. Everything went quiet.
The gloom on David’s face slipped away. He actually laughed.
She was just too easy to tease.
His mind flashed back to the photo he’d seen earlier. The red carnelian necklace stood out against her delicate neck, looking elegant and beautiful.
He remembered what Ella’s best friend had called him. Was it “jerk”?
“Ella, what did you do? He just hands you a carnelian necklace like it’s nothing.”
David’s eyes took on a darker glint, the memory of that night in the car playing in his head.
He blinked, trying to clear his thoughts. He had to admit, Ella had left an impression. That was why, on his trip abroad, he’d bought her the necklace the moment he saw it.
They hadn’t done the last step. But she was the first woman to ever do what she did for him. And a man never forgets his first.
Just then, the office door opened and Jessa strolled in. “David, you’re back?”
“Yeah,” David replied.
Jessa didn’t hesitate. She walked straight over, sat on his lap, and wrapped her arms around his neck. “So, where’s my present?”
David paused, a little caught off guard. He’d only bought a gift for Ella. He hadn’t even thought of getting something for Jessa.
That was a first for him.
Jessa looked at him, her eyes full of hope. David lowered his voice, trying to smooth things over. “I forgot. What do you want? I can have my assistant pick something out for you.”
Jessa’s eyes widened in surprise. “Wait, didn’t you order that red carnelian and diamond necklace from Alber? Wasn’t that for me?”
She was so sure it was hers.
He nodded anyway. “Alright.”
Jessa reached up, brushing her hand along his jaw, her eyes shining with affection. “Did you miss me while you were away?”
David gently removed her hand and helped her off his lap. “I just got back. I have work to finish. You should head home.”
Work, always work. That was all he ever seemed to care about.
Didn’t he have any feelings? Any normal needs?
Jessa couldn’t help feeling a little hurt.
…
Two days later, Ella and Atlas arrived at the resort. David and Jessa were already there. The four of them were officially on a getaway.
The resort manager was waiting for them in the lobby. “Mr. Harmon, Atlas, welcome. I’ve prepared our two best presidential suites with ocean views for you.”
