Mr. Johnson froze the moment he saw Ella. His eyes lit up with greedy excitement. “Well, well, where did this cutie come from?”
Monica shrank behind Ella, her hands shaking. “She’s my friend, Mr. Johnson. We’re both students. We’re not here for... that. Please, just let us go...”
Mr. Johnson’s lips curled into a smirk. “Students, huh? That’s even better. I love student girls.” His gaze lingered on Ella, hungry and bold. “Since you’re friends, you can both keep me company tonight.” He nodded to his bodyguards. “Take them both.”
Ella stepped in front of Monica, shielding her from the men in black. Her voice was cold and steady. “You can’t just take people in broad daylight. That’s illegal. You know that, right?”
Mr. Johnson burst out laughing, cocky and careless. “Illegal? Please. In Rockford Bay, I’m a big shot. I can sit at the same table as Mr. Harmon, the richest man in the city. You think I care about the law?”
Ella hadn’t spoken to David in days. In Rockford Bay, he was the man everyone feared. The kind of person who could change the weather in this city with a single word.
Mr. Johnson was losing patience. “What are you all waiting for? Grab them!”
The bodyguards closed in.
Monica clung to Ella’s arm, voice barely above a whisper. “Ella, what do we do?”
As one of the guards reached for her, Ella’s eyes flashed with anger. “Don’t you dare.”
She stared down Mr. Johnson, her tone sharp as ice. “Do you even know who I am?”
Something in the way Ella stood made Mr. Johnson hesitate. “And who are you supposed to be?”
Ella spoke slowly, each word like a warning. “I’m David Harmon’s wife. I am Mrs. Harmon.”
The room went silent.
Mr. Johnson gaped at her. “You’re Mrs. Harmon?”
David’s eyes flicked to him, cool and unreadable. “Mr. Johnson.”
Mr. Johnson hurried to explain. “Sorry to bother you, Mr. Harmon, but I have a girl here. I thought you might recognize her.” He gestured straight at Ella.
Ella lifted her gaze. David’s icy eyes locked on hers. Everyone behind him turned to look.
Her heart pounded. She had only used David’s name to bluff her way out of trouble. She never thought he would actually show up. The last time they saw each other, she’d slapped him in a hospital hallway. Things had ended on the worst possible note.
Would he acknowledge her?
A flush of embarrassment crept up her cheeks. She could barely breathe.
David didn’t show a single emotion. His voice was low and smooth as he answered, “I don’t know her.”
