Lilly shot Ella a playful wink. “I’ve got to say, your husband really came through this time.”
Monica gawked at Ella, her jaw practically on the floor. “Wait, Ella, Mr. Harmon is your husband? You’re actually Mrs. Harmon?”
Lilly nodded with a grin. “Yep, that’s right. Ella is Mrs. Harmon.”
Monica could hardly believe it. She squeezed Ella’s hand, her eyes full of envy. “Ella, you’re so lucky.”
Ella just gave a small, complicated smile. Lucky wasn’t exactly how she’d describe herself.
Later that night, Ella lay in bed, scrolling through her phone. She hesitated for a second, then opened her chat with the contact saved as “Hubby.” After a moment, she sent him a simple message.
[Thank you.]
A reply popped up almost right away.
[How do you plan to thank me?]
Ella’s fingers paused over the keyboard. She didn’t answer. Instead, she tucked her phone under her pillow and closed her eyes.
The next morning, Monica made her way to Harmon Corporation. The skyscraper dominated the heart of Rockford Bay, all glass and steel, a monument to money and power.
She walked up to the front desk. “Hi, I’d like to see Mr. Harmon.”
The receptionist smiled politely. “Do you have an appointment?”
“No, but Mr. Harmon knows me.”
“I’m sorry, but without an appointment, you can’t see him.”
Monica’s face fell. She turned to leave, disappointed, but just then a group of people came striding across the lobby. David was at the center, tall and focused, discussing something with his executives.
Monica’s whole face lit up. She hurried over. “Mr. Harmon, hello.”
Then he turned and walked away, leaving Monica standing there, stunned.
The receptionist came over quickly. “Ma’am, please leave.”
Monica’s eyes filled with tears. She clung to the gift bag, the one with the hand-stitched sachet she’d spent hours making. David hadn’t even looked at it. With no other choice, she left.
Outside, just as she stepped out, a big black van pulled up. Anna, a red-hot star from the entertainment world, swept out, surrounded by assistants and bodyguards, and headed straight into Harmon Corporation.
Two female employees nearby were whispering.
“That’s Anna, right? She’s the new star everyone’s talking about from Global Entertainment, our own company’s rising star.”
“If you sign with Global Entertainment, making it big is almost guaranteed.”
“Forget that. If you ever become the CEO’s woman, you can have anything you want.”
