Monica stopped right where she was. “Ella, Lilly. What are the odds? You’re here too?”
Ella and Lilly started moving closer, but Monica’s bodyguards stepped in front of them. “Stop right there!”
Monica waved her hand with a smile. “It’s fine. They’re my friends.”
The bodyguards stepped aside and finally, Ella and Lilly could walk up to Monica.
“Monica, are you really a celebrity now?” Lilly asked, her eyes wide.
Monica raised her eyebrows. “Yeah, I am. I got a boyfriend and he’s the reason I’m famous now.”
“A boyfriend? Seriously, Monica? How come we’ve never heard about him before?”
Monica grinned. “He’s gorgeous, super rich, and he absolutely loves me.”
She stepped closer and took Ella’s hand. “Ella, my life’s so good now. I know you’re happy for me, right? You’ll wish us well, won’t you?”
Ella’s eyes were calm and clear as she looked at Monica. “Congratulations, Monica.”
Monica smiled even brighter. “Thank you, Ella. I have to go now, but let’s catch up soon.”
She spun around and walked off, her group trailing after her.
Lilly looked puzzled. “Ella, who’s this boyfriend? There aren’t many guys in Rockford Bay who could give her all that.”
Rockford Bay wasn’t exactly huge, but it wasn’t tiny either. The rich crowd was a small circle, and there were only a handful of men who could throw that much money behind Monica.
Ella watched Monica disappear around the corner. “I honestly don’t know.”
“Ella, it doesn’t even seem like she’s in a relationship. It feels more like she found a sugar daddy. Who do you think it is?”
Ella glanced one more time in Monica’s direction, then slipped her arm through Lilly’s. “Whatever’s going on, Monica got what she wanted. Come on, I’m starving. Let’s get dinner.”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
Ella had just finished class when Lilly came running up to her, breathless. “Ella, did you hear? Monica was at Vogue doing a historical photoshoot to promote her new movie, The Grand Age. But when she was up in the harness, the wire snapped and she fell. She got hurt and they took her to the hospital.”
Ella stopped in her tracks. She hadn’t seen anything about it. She didn’t really keep up with celebrity gossip, but this was probably all over social media already.
“Is she okay?”
“I think she’ll be fine. Nothing too serious.”
Suddenly, something clicked in Ella’s mind. “Lilly, where did you say the shoot was?”
“Vogue.”
Ella’s brow furrowed. She had a really bad feeling about this.
She pulled out her phone and tried calling Fiona. The phone rang and rang, but nobody picked up.
She quickly dialed Fiona’s assistant instead. The girl answered in a shaky, tearful voice. “Fiona’s in trouble. She was taken away. They brought her to the police station.”
