Ella’s small face was flushed red as she gasped for air, then bit down hard on his tongue. The sudden pain made David let go. She sucked in deep breaths, her long lashes trembling as she tried to steady herself, looking so fragile and startled it was almost impossible not to want to hold her.
David gripped her chin, tilting her head up to meet his eyes.
“Ella, if you try to bite me again, your best friend won’t be getting out. Do you understand?” His voice was rough, the threat clear.
He stood over her, every inch the man in control.
Ella stared back at him. After a few tense seconds, she gave in, her voice soft. “I understand.”
David reached over to grab a condom from the passenger seat.
But before he could, Ella shoved him back, flipping the script. “Why should you be the only one undressing me? I want to undress you too.”
She fumbled with the buttons on his suit jacket, her movements rushed and desperate. When the buttons wouldn’t come undone, she just started tugging at them.
David leaned his head against the seat, his eyes fluttering shut for a moment as he tried to stop her. “Slow down. Don’t ruin the buttons. I don’t have any spare clothes in the car.”
The buttons were too stubborn, so Ella gave up on them. Instead, her hand slid up under his shirt, her fingers pressing against the hard lines of his abs.
David’s throat tightened, heat burning through him.
He pulled her closer, holding her against his chest. “Why are you so greedy tonight?”
Ella’s face burned even brighter, but she didn’t answer.
David kissed her again.
This time, Ella didn’t fight back. She let him kiss her, but her hand moved slyly to her waist. She pulled out a thin silver needle, aiming for a pressure point on his body.
She missed.
David’s hand shot out, grabbing her wrist tight. “What are you trying to do?”
Busted. Again.
Something flickered in David’s eyes. A wild, impossible thought.
What if that night hadn’t been a dream?
What if it was Ella with him that night?
As she fought to get her needle back, a phone started ringing, the sound slicing through the tension.
It was Lilly calling.
“Ella, amazing news. Just like you said, Monica changed her statement. She proved Fiona’s innocence. Fiona’s out. She’s free!” Lilly’s voice was bubbling with excitement.
Ella’s lips curled into a relieved smile. She’d done it. She’d saved Fiona.
She turned to David. “Fiona’s been released. I don’t need your help anymore. Our deal is over.”
Her eyes were clear, shining with quick intelligence, and for a moment David just stared at her. Then he asked, “What did you do?”
