She must have pulled off something bold to save Fiona at the last minute.
Ella still hadn’t hung up the phone when Lilly caught David’s voice in the background. “Ella, where are you and Mr. Harmon right now?”
“We’re…”
“Ella, I see his car!”
Before Ella could react, she heard someone knocking on the window. Lilly had already run over.
Ella hadn’t expected Lilly to be so close. The dark, expensive window tint kept them hidden, but Lilly’s sudden arrival made Ella jump. She was still sitting on David’s lap, the two of them tangled together, way too close for comfort.
Just then, David’s low, rough voice broke the moment. “Ella.”
She looked at him. “What?”
“Let go.”
“Huh?”
David glanced down. Her legs were wrapped tightly around his waist; she must have clung to him in shock earlier.
He swallowed hard. “Your legs. Loosen up. You’re holding me too tight.”
Ella’s face turned bright red. She hurriedly untangled herself and scrambled back to the passenger seat. Then she opened the door. “Lilly.”
“Ella!” Lilly grabbed her hand and grinned. “Fiona’s safe! Let’s go pick her up from the station and bring her home.”
“Okay, let me call a cab.”
“Don’t bother. We’ve got Mr. Harmon’s car right here.”
Ella was about to argue, but Lilly had already opened the back door and pushed her in.
Lilly leaned forward, looking at the man in the driver’s seat. “Mr. Harmon, could you drive us to the police station?”
“Pretty smart, right, Mr. Harmon?” Lilly piped up.
David let out a low, amused laugh. This time, he’d been the one played.
She had turned everything around, using him as her leverage.
He looked at Ella again, his expression impossible to read. “Yeah, smart.”
He said it so offhand it almost sounded like he was teasing her, not praising her.
Ella met his gaze and flashed a bright, confident smile. “Thanks for the compliment.”
…
Half an hour later, David’s Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of the police station. Ella and Lilly climbed out and went inside to bring Fiona home.
