More than anything, Monica wanted Ella to see just how happy she was.
Ella just watched her, calm and unreadable, saying nothing.
Monica rested her hand on her belly and smiled. “Ella, are you jealous? Some people end up taking birth control pills after a night together, then pass out from an allergy. But look at me. I get to be pregnant and spoiled rotten. I guess life just works out better for some of us.”
Lilly and Fiona bristled, ready to snap back.
But Ella stopped them. Her voice was small. “Let’s just go.”
She turned and walked away.
Lilly and Fiona hurried after her. “Ella, why didn’t you let us put her in her place?”
Ella gave a small, self-mocking smile. “Why bother? She’s not wrong.”
She had taken the pills and passed out. Monica was pregnant and living like a star.
His feelings couldn’t be clearer.
Monica knew exactly how to hit her where it hurt. It was a thorn buried deep in Ella’s heart. Every word, every reminder, stung all over again.
The three of them waited for the elevator. That’s when a group came their way, led by a tall, handsome man. David had arrived.
David was surrounded by Aiden and some others. The Royal Hotel manager was all smiles, personally welcoming him. “Mr. Harmon, the VIP elevator is ready for you.”
He held the door wide.
So David really was here, for Monica’s birthday party. Of course he was. Monica was pregnant with his child.
Inside the VIP elevator, David looked up and his eyes locked on Ella. “Come in.”
He was inviting them into the VIP elevator.
The hotel manager chimed in, polite and eager. “This way, ladies.”
Ella didn’t want to step inside. She still didn’t know why David had apologized last night, but she had no plans to forgive him. She didn’t want to ride in the same elevator. Honestly, she hadn’t even expected to see him today.
He gave a small, unreadable smile. “I have a little dog at home. She’s not very obedient. Always biting me.”
“Mr. Harmon has a puppy? That’s one lucky dog.”
Everyone started to gush with envy.
Ella rolled her eyes.
The elevator chimed and the doors slid open.
Ella stepped out as quickly as she could.
Lilly and Fiona hurried after her. “Ella, slow down. Wait for us.”
David watched Ella’s retreating figure, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
Just then, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Monica.
