David’s voice was low and warm. “Mr. Shepherd, is the genius girl going to be at the symposium?”
Wait, what?
The words “genius girl” hit Jessa right in the heart. She sat up straighter, instantly alert.
That mysterious, untouchable genius girl was finally going to show up?
Mr. Shepherd replied, “Mr. Harmon, she has been here in Rockford Bay all along. It’s a pity you’ve both been in the same place without realizing it.
“But not anymore. She’ll be at the symposium, so you’ll finally get to meet her.
“Mr. Harmon, you have to make time to come that day.”
David nodded. “I will.”
Once they hung up, Jessa stared at him in shock. “David, she has been in Rockford Bay this whole time? Who is she?”
Rockford Bay wasn’t a big place. If there was a genius girl around, Jessa felt like she would have heard about her by now.
Her existence bothered her more than she wanted to admit.
David hadn’t heard of her either. He had no clue who this supposed genius girl was.
Thinking about how mysterious and cool she seemed, David lifted an eyebrow. Honestly, he was pretty curious too.
“We’ll find out at the symposium.”
…
Ella had been seriously ill, drifting in and out of sleep for a whole week.
On the eighth day, she felt better. The sickness faded away, leaving her feeling light and new.
Lilly and Fiona threw their arms around her. “Ella, you scared us so much.”
Ella pushed open the window. The sun poured in, warm and golden, lighting up her delicate frame. She breathed in the fresh air and gave them a playful wink. “Lilly, Fiona, you don’t have to worry. I’m okay now.”
She really was.
There was a new light in her eyes. Breaking apart and putting herself back together had hurt like hell, but she’d made it.
He had no idea how much he was about to change his mind.
Mr. Lynch kept teaching, today’s topic a famous ancient medical text. As he spoke, Ella suddenly woke up from her nap.
Her clear eyes locked onto his, and she motioned for him to come over.
Mr. Lynch hesitated for a second. What was going on with her?
He walked over to her desk.
Ella looked up at him. “You made a mistake just now.”
What?
Mr. Lynch stiffened. He was a legend in the medical field. No one had ever told him he was wrong before, especially not Ella.
He responded, full of confidence, “That’s not possible.”
Ella sat up straight. “Check volume ten, page 4008. You got it wrong.”
