Sarah was the daughter of David’s uncle, and she’d always been super close to Jessa.
The moment she spotted Ella, her nose scrunched up with disgust. “Ella, David doesn’t even like you. Are you here to cozy up to my grandma again? She’s the only one in the family who even tolerates you. Seriously, take a good look at yourself. You’re just some country bumpkin who stepped in to marry David while Jessa was away. Do you really think that makes you the lady of the Harmon family? You’re not good enough for David. Just get divorced already.”
Ella had gotten used to it. David’s family, just like his friends, never liked her.
She didn’t bother replying to Sarah and walked right into the old house.
Grandma Chelsea, her silver hair shining under the light, reached out and grabbed Ella’s hand with a big smile. “Ella, why haven’t you visited me these past few days? Didn’t you miss me?”
This was the only bit of warmth Ella ever felt in the Harmon family. Grandma Chelsea truly loved her.
Ella smiled and leaned in for a gentle hug. “Of course I missed you, Grandma.”
Grandma Chelsea’s smile lit up her whole face.
Just then, David walked in, tall and handsome without even trying.
Ella let go of Grandma Chelsea and straightened up. “Grandma, you haven’t had your herbal soup in a while, have you? I’ll go make some for you.”
She slipped off to the kitchen.
David sat down next to his grandmother. “Grandma.”
Grandma Chelsea glanced at the kitchen where Ella was moving around. “David, did you have a fight with Ella?”
David didn’t want to upset her, especially since her health wasn’t great. “No.”
She had the softest hands, hands that had touched every part of him.
He’d always thought it was Jessa.
But when he finally opened his eyes, it was Ella. She told him her name, and nothing was as he’d expected.
That night, Grandma Chelsea insisted David and Ella spend the night at the house. Neither of them could say no.
Later, David walked into the bedroom. Ella had her back to him, a pen in her hand as she scribbled something in a notebook.
He heard a voice message playing from her phone. It was her best friend, Fiona.
“My dear Ella, you’re about to get divorced. Stop wasting your time playing housekeeper for his family, okay? Come out already. I have a bunch of blind dates lined up for you.”
