The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 300

Ella and Lilly were curled up under the same blanket, wide awake and lost in conversation.

“Ella, have you ever met a guy like that?” Lilly’s voice was soft in the quiet room.

“Like what kind of guy?” Ella asked, curious.

Lilly pictured that handsome face with the buzz cut. “You know, the kind who’s really cold and cool. He can fight, too, which is kind of intimidating...”

Ella glanced at the black baseball jacket hanging neatly on the rack. Lilly had worn it earlier, then carefully hung it back up. Anyone could tell it belonged to the boy who saved her.

Ella’s lips curved into a teasing smile. “You mean Jace, right?”

Lilly nodded. “Yeah, him.”

Ella’s eyes sparkled as she grinned. “So, your knight in shining armor saves you, and now you want to marry him as a thank you?”

Lilly’s cheeks turned bright red. “Ella, stop it. I’m not talking to you anymore.”

Ella couldn’t help but laugh, the sound light and warm.

Lilly reached out and covered Ella’s mouth, trying not to laugh herself. “Ella, seriously, don’t tease me.”

Rain poured down outside, tapping against the window. David lay on his own bed, listening to the gentle voices and laughter coming from the girls. Their quiet giggles filled the cramped little room with a comforting kind of warmth.

A subtle smile tugged at David’s lips.

“Don’t make fun of me, Ella,” Lilly said, pouting just a little. “I really don’t know who else I can talk to about this. Only you, my cousin-in-law.”

To Lilly, Ella was more than just her cousin’s wife. She was someone she trusted completely.

Ella paused, surprised. “Cousin-in-law?”

Lilly’s heart skipped. She suddenly remembered Ella didn’t know her real identity yet.

Ella thought back, remembering something about Lilly’s cousin. “Wait, are you talking about that jerk of a cousin you have?”

Lilly thought about that for a second, but her tiredness was catching up with her. She squeezed Ella’s hand. “Either way, I have to get his jacket cleaned and give it back. I want to thank him in person. Ella, I’m so sleepy. Let’s go to bed.”

Ella nodded. “Yeah, let’s sleep.”

So the two girls drifted off together, slipping into dreams side by side.

David, though, couldn’t sleep at all. The soft hum of their voices still echoed in his ears.

He turned and looked at Ella. Half her face was hidden in the blanket, and she looked so peaceful, fast asleep.

He reached out and lifted the edge of her blanket, uncovering her leg.

She really had hit it on a rock earlier. She’d shown Lilly her right leg, which was completely fine. But her left shin was swollen and red. She just hadn’t said anything about it.

David realized now why Lilly and Ella were so close, even though he’d always wanted Lilly to get along with Jessa. Now, everything made sense.
