Peter grabbed the remote and switched off the TV.
Rachel walked over. Peter glanced at her. “Is Jessa asleep?”
“She just cried herself to sleep,” Rachel said softly. “Honey, Jessa wants to marry Mr. Harmon so much. Can’t you help her?”
Peter’s eyes grew cold. “What are you getting at?”
Rachel hesitated for a moment, then spoke up. “You think I don’t know? Jessa isn’t your biological daughter.”
Peter pressed his lips together and stayed silent.
“Jessa comes from a powerful family. If you’d just tell everyone who she really is, all the obstacles would disappear. She could marry Mr. Harmon without any trouble.”
Peter stood up. “I don’t want to hear this again. You better keep it to yourself.”
He left her with that warning and headed upstairs.
Rachel refused to give up. “Why won’t you tell everyone the truth about Jessa?”
Peter paused on the stairs, his usually gentle aura now shadowed by something deeper. After a long silence, he finally said, “Jessa’s mother never wanted her to return to the capital.”
That bitch again...
Rachel’s eyes narrowed, a sharp glint of jealousy and anger in them. No wonder Ella, left to grow up in the countryside, still turned out to be a genius. She must have gotten those incredible genes from her mother.
But so what?
All the glory, all the praise, would soon belong to Jessa.
Peter had refused her for now, but Rachel knew his heart was wavering. He cared too much about Jessa to stay firm forever.
It was just a matter of time before he revealed who Jessa truly was.
Rachel couldn’t help but let out a strange, satisfied smile.
…
The next day, David was sitting in his office when his phone rang. It was Mr. Lynch, just back from a business trip.
He still didn’t know that David and Ella were divorced.
David didn’t reply.
Mr. Lynch changed the subject. “So, how did the birthmark on Allie’s face just disappear? She told me Ella gave her some really bitter candy.”
David’s brows drew together. “I’m not sure. I asked Ella about it and she said…”
“What did she say?”
She said, I’m not telling you.
Just then, Ava’s cheerful voice called out from the entryway. “Miss, you’re back.”
Ella and Lilly had arrived.
David looked up at the door.
