He lay there, staring up at the ceiling, realizing it had all been a dream. He’d dreamed about Ella. She had slipped into his dreams last night, lingering there long after he woke up.
His throat felt dry and tight, every muscle in his body coiled and tense. Mornings always seemed to hit harder these days, everything a little more sensitive, a little more raw. David let his hand drift under the covers and closed his eyes again, giving in to a wave of frustration that he couldn’t shake.
…
Snow had fallen all through the night, blanketing everything in white. Today, everyone had planned to go skiing together. The group was already gathered, but David hadn’t shown up yet.
“Where’s David?”
“I’ll go get him.”
Just as someone turned to leave, David stepped out of his room. His face was as handsome as ever, but there was nothing warm about it. The air around him practically froze. He nodded once. “Morning.”
“You are here! Let’s head out to the ski resort.”
David’s eyes immediately found Ella. She stood next to Luke, chatting quietly.
Luke leaned toward her. “Ella, did you see the message I sent you earlier?”
Ella smiled and nodded. “Yeah, I saw it, Luke.”
David let out a soft, sarcastic laugh. “Luke, you have Ella’s number?”
Luke nodded. “Yeah, of course.”
A few others joined in, grinning. “We all have Ella’s number. Don’t you?”
David didn’t answer. He just stood there, silent, his mood sinking even lower.
So he was the only one who didn’t have Ella’s number? She’d added everyone else, but not him?
She hesitated for a second, then slipped her gloved hands into his. Luke led her out onto the slope.
From the edge, David watched them, his eyes fixed on their joined hands. His gaze was so cold it could have frozen the snow beneath him.
Luke turned out to be a patient teacher, and Ella picked things up quickly. Before long, she was gliding on her own, laughing as she found her balance.
“This is amazing!”
She was completely caught up in the moment, but suddenly a shout cut through the air. Someone behind her had lost control and came barreling straight toward her, yelling, “Move! Watch out!”
Ella’s eyes went wide. She tried to move, but her feet wouldn’t listen. She froze, panic locking her in place.
In that instant, someone crashed into her, knocking her out of harm’s way. They tumbled down together, rolling through the snow, breathless and tangled, but safe.
