The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 340

Everything happened in a blur. One moment, Ella was tumbling, the next, she looked up and saw David’s handsome, refined face right in front of her.

He had thrown himself over her at just the right moment, saving her from disaster.

Why was it him?

“David?”

They were rolling fast, heading straight for a huge rock. In seconds, they’d crash into it.

David’s arms wrapped around her, holding her tight. His voice was low and steady. “Hold on to me.”

Ella didn’t think. She just clung to him.

They hit the rock hard and came to a stop with a loud thud.

He ended up underneath her, shielding her from the impact. She was sprawled across his chest, his arms still around her. Ella pushed herself up quickly. “Are you hurt? Did you hit the rock?”

She hadn’t felt any pain. David had twisted them at the last second, taking the blow himself. His head had slammed into the rock so hard she could still hear the sound in her ears.

Now he lay still, eyes closed, completely unresponsive.

Panic shot through her. “David? David! Open your eyes. Please, don’t do this!”

He didn’t move.

Ella tried to get up, desperate to call for help.

But a strong hand caught her arm and gently pulled her back down into his embrace.

David opened his eyes and looked at her, a small smile playing on his lips. “Ella, what are you freaking out about?”

She stared at him, stunned.

He grinned a little. “Didn’t you say you don’t love me anymore? Why are you so worried then? I caught you, didn’t I?”

He’d been pretending?

Relief washed over her so fast she almost cried. She punched his chest, not too hard but not exactly gentle either. “David, you’re the worst!”

Her legs were still shaky from the scare.

David let go of her face and winced. “My head hurts.”

Ella snapped to attention. “Where?”

He pointed. “Right here.”

She leaned in close, fingers brushing gently through his short hair. She found a big, swollen bump on his scalp.

“Is it here?”

“Yeah.”

“Let me rub it.”

Her touch was gentle, and she blew softly on the spot for good measure.

They were so close now. She was practically lying on top of him, caring for his injury. David could smell the sweet, fresh pine scent that always clung to her, mixed with something warm and feminine.

The memory of last night’s steamy dream hit him out of nowhere. He swallowed hard, trying to focus on anything but the way she felt in his arms.
