“David, we’ve met before.”
Had they really? David searched his memory, but nothing came to mind. When could that have happened? Still, being near her felt strangely familiar, like a pull he couldn’t resist.
“David, we…” Ella’s fingers went to her neck, searching for the pendant he’d once given her. But she came up empty. Only then did she remember she’d left it back in her room.
“Wait here, okay? I need to grab something. I’ll be right back.” Ella barely finished her sentence before darting away.
David watched her slender figure disappear, his thoughts spinning. What was she going to get?
…
Back at the resort, Ella rushed into her room and grabbed the pendant from her nightstand. She held it tight, hope fluttering in her chest. Maybe if David saw this, he’d remember their past. Maybe he’d remember her. She had to try.
Ella hurried back to the ski slope. From a distance, she spotted David, still standing right where she’d left him, waiting. She broke into a run, ready to call his name. “David…”
But her steps faltered. Standing next to David was another girl, stunning and radiant. It’s Jessa.
Jessa had flown in from Rockford Bay and was now right by David’s side.
Ella froze, her excitement draining away in an instant. She suddenly felt silly for thinking a pendant could bring back his memories. He didn’t even remember her. If she mattered, he wouldn’t have forgotten, right? He was with Jessa now. He loved Jessa.
Lowering her gaze, Ella stared at the pendant clutched in her hand and let out a quiet, bitter laugh.
Forget it.
She turned to leave. But before she could take a step, she realized someone was standing behind her. The surprise made her jump.
She didn’t wait for a reply and walked off, leaving Cedric staring after her.
Up ahead, David was caught off guard by Jessa’s sudden appearance. “Why are you here?”
“Why can’t I be here? David, why haven’t you answered my calls? Aiden said you were in Seacore City for work, but then I hear Ella’s here to see the snow with some people. Isn’t that a little too much of a coincidence? Did you come after her?” Jessa’s voice was sharp.
David pressed his lips together. “I needed to ask Ella something.”
“What is it?”
“I think Ella and I have met before.”
Jessa’s heart skipped a beat. Did David know something?
