They were already divorced.
David hadn’t forgotten. “You had a fever. I was just trying to warm you up.”
Ella shot him a look. “Is all this really necessary? Do you warm up every woman like this?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Other women don’t try to rip my buttons off. You started it, remember?”
Ella glanced down and saw one of his shirt buttons was missing. That was definitely her doing.
She tried pushing him away. “Get off me!”
David caught her hands and pinned them to the bed, then leaned down and kissed her cheek.
He clearly wasn’t ready to stop.
Ella squirmed, trying to break free. “David, we’re divorced. If you want someone, go find Jessa. If you sleep around, you should get checked regularly. Don’t blame me if you catch something.”
David couldn’t help but laugh, even though she was as sharp-tongued as ever.
He tilted her chin up. “I’ve never touched Jessa.”
Wait, what?
He’d never touched Jessa?
Ella froze. She knew he and Jessa had been together for years, but he was saying they’d never even...?
While she was distracted, David leaned in and kissed her hard.
It was a demanding kiss, almost like he was trying to claim her all over again. Ella struggled but couldn’t get away. Her arms and legs, which had been cold before, started to feel warm again. A flush crept up her cheeks, equal parts embarrassed and angry.
“David, there’s no protection,” she blurted.
His eyes stayed on her. “Pretty sure it’s your safe days. Your period’s coming soon.”
“I still don’t want to.”
“Why not?”
“You said it yourself. There’s a price difference with and without a condom. Why should I let you go premium for free?”
She tried to sit up, but he tightened his arm around her waist, keeping her in place. He called out, “Who is it?”
Gina’s voice came from outside. “David, are you awake? It’s me.”
Ella turned to him and whispered, “Wow, Mr. Harmon. Even in a tiny village, your charm is off the charts. I’m almost impressed.”
David shot her a warning look, but he called back to Gina, “I’ll be up in a minute.”
“David, is your sister feeling better?”
Sister?
Since when was she his sister?
David didn’t even flinch. “Much better,” he replied.
“David, you’re meeting my dad today. He’s really happy and already has a big meal planned. We’ll be waiting for you.” Gina’s footsteps faded away.
Ella looked at David, eyebrow raised. “So now I’m your sister? Is this how you win over sweet girls, by lying to them?”
