Rachel leaned back, her eyes distant as she tried to remember. “Oh, right. Herbs Life went public overseas on April eleventh. People called it the 411 legend or something like that.”
Maureen nodded. “Yeah, that sounds familiar.”
Jessa turned the bottle of medicine over in her hands, curiosity flickering in her eyes. “So the founder must be some kind of genius, right? David, do you know them?”
She was still seething inside, but she couldn’t let her anger show, not with David sitting right there. If anything, she clung tighter to him, silently blaming Ella for everything that had happened.
David paused, thinking it over. “We met once, a long time ago.”
It was true. He had crossed paths with Herbs Life’s founder six years ago in Los Angeles.
Back then, David was already a big deal in the business world. He’d been invited to a Wall Street summit, and that night happened to be the very one Herbs Life was ringing in its IPO. He could still remember hearing the sound of the ceremonial bell at midnight.
Someone had leaned over and whispered, “She’s only sixteen. Can you believe it?”
Funny thing was, David had also taken his first company public at sixteen.
Such a strange coincidence.
Later that night, after the dinner was over, he stepped outside and caught a glimpse of the founder. Only her back, but it was enough to leave an impression.
She wore a black slip dress and a fringed shawl, her heels dangling from her fingertips as she walked through the sparkling lights of Los Angeles. Maybe her feet hurt, but she looked completely at ease, walking barefoot on the pavement, the whole city glowing around her.
In that moment, all the lights seemed to exist just to frame her.
It was only a brief glance.
A slim, graceful figure, quietly radiant, unforgettable.
Even now, six years later, David could picture her perfectly.
Rachel broke the silence, her curiosity getting the better of her. “Mr. Harmon, is the founder really old?”
“Wyatt is a legend, both in business and... other circles. What’s he doing in Rockford Bay? I heard he’s insanely good-looking.”
“That’s not all. He’s got two friends who are just as impressive, and all three of them spoil their fellow apprentice like she’s royalty.”
David’s brow furrowed. He knew Wyatt, had even done business with him before.
What Wyatt doing actually here in Rockford Bay?
A luxury car rolled to a stop outside, and Wyatt stepped out. He wore a trench coat and looked every bit as striking as the rumors said. His bodyguards made way for him as he strode through the entrance.
Jessa leaned in closer to David. “Why do you think Wyatt came here?”
David kept his expression cool, watching carefully. “No idea. But the way he’s moving, I’d say he’s here to meet someone.”
Just then, Rachel let out a gasp. “Ella?!”
