Grandma Jill and Maureen stood frozen, their faces drained of color. “Wyatt, what are you talking about? Doctor E can’t be a woman. He’s dating me. He’s a man!”

Wyatt just lifted an eyebrow. “I know Doctor E, and we’re actually pretty close. If I say she’s a woman, then she’s a woman.”

Maureen stared at him, completely stunned. She shook her head, unwilling to believe it. “No way. Wyatt, you have to be messing with me!”

Grandma Jill wasn’t buying it either. “Wyatt, I know you’re with Ella now, but that’s no reason to joke about something like this.”

Since they clearly weren’t going to listen, Wyatt just shrugged. “Believe it or not, Doctor E is a woman. Ella, let’s go.”

“Alright.”

Wyatt took Ella’s hand and the two of them walked off.

Grandma Jill and Maureen just stood there, still in shock. Grandma Jill clutched Maureen’s arm, her voice trembling. “Maureen, why would Wyatt say something like that about Doctor E? What’s really going on?”

Jessa came out, changed into fresh clothes, with Rachel by her side. They crowded in, all of them looking worried. “Maureen, are you sure the person you’re dating is actually Doctor E? There’s no mistake, right?”

“Maureen, we can’t afford to be wrong about this. We’ve put every cent we have into this, Grandma even mortgaged the old house. If we’ve been fooled, the Irvine family is done for.”

Maureen was tense too. She’d always thought she was dating the real Doctor E. When Ella called him a fraud before, nobody believed her. Now Wyatt was saying the same thing, and Maureen couldn’t help but start to doubt.

Still, she forced herself to stay calm. “Why are you all taking Wyatt so seriously? He’s Ella’s boyfriend now, of course he’s going to take her side and try to mess with us. Don’t listen to him.”

Jessa turned to David. “David, what do you think?”
