The doorbell chimed.
A moment later, the apartment door swung open, and there was Ella, graceful as ever. “Who is it… David?” Her voice carried a hint of surprise.
She caught sight of David standing in the hallway. He took her in quietly. Gone was the glamorous party dress, replaced by a loose, comfy home dress. The makeup she’d worn earlier was gone too, leaving her bare-faced and somehow even more beautiful. The glow from the evening had softened, but the charm was still there.
“Ella, do you have a minute?” David asked, his tone careful.
Ella’s lashes fluttered. “Is there something you need?”
“I…” David started, but before he could get another word out, a man’s voice came from inside the apartment. “Who is it, Ella?”
David glanced past her and spotted Wyatt inside, wearing slippers and munching on an apple. “Mr. Harmon? What brings you here?”
David’s words caught in his throat. He hadn’t expected to find Wyatt here too.
Ella looked back at him. “Do you need something? If not, I’ll head back in.”
David pressed his lips together, his eyes lingering on her. “Is it just you and Wyatt inside?”
“Would it be weird if it was just us?” Ella shot back.
David’s expression shifted, his face turning colder, jaw tight.
The silence stretched until Lilly popped her head out from the kitchen. “Ella, are you coming? The food’s about to burn.”
Then Fiona’s voice called out too. “Ella, hurry up!”
