“David!” Grandma Chelsea’s voice shook with shock.
Ella froze in the doorway. She never imagined David would step in front of Jessa to take the blow for her.
Jessa really was his weakness, the one he couldn’t hide.
David looked straight at Grandma Chelsea. “Grandma, that’s enough. I want to be with Jessa. She didn’t do anything wrong. This is all on me. Don’t touch her. If you want to hit someone, hit me.”
Jessa grabbed his arm. “No, please, don’t hurt David! If you have to, hit me instead!”
The two of them stood together, desperate and determined. For a moment, they looked like a pair of tragic lovers, and Grandma Chelsea was the villain trying to tear them apart.
A wave of bitterness washed over Ella.
Grandma Chelsea’s hand trembled as she gripped the whip. “David, your wife is Ella. Have you already forgotten who stayed by your side for three years while you were in that coma? How can you hurt Ella like this? Jessa has clouded your mind. Fine. I’ll beat some sense into you today.”
With a heavy heart, she raised the whip again.
“Grandma, stop!” Ella rushed over and grabbed her arm.
“Ella, it’s okay. I’m here for you. No one will ever hurt you while I’m around,” Grandma Chelsea said, her anger flaring.
A warmth spread through Ella’s chest at those words.
Suddenly, Jessa let out a cry. “David, my heart... it hurts!”
David spun around. Jessa was clutching her chest, her face twisted in pain.
“Jessa!”
Ella stepped forward, reaching out to check Jessa’s pulse. “Let me take a look.”
Before she could touch her, David’s hand closed around Ella’s wrist, tight and unyielding.
She looked up into his eyes. They were cold, almost cutting. “Stop pretending you care,” he said, each word colder than the last.
He pushed her away. Ella lost her balance, her hip slamming into the corner of the desk. Pain shot through her, and tears instantly filled her eyes.
