Jessa could be as bold as she wanted, all because David was always there to back her up. He had spoiled her from the start, and everyone knew it.
Ella managed a bitter smile. “Felix, what really happened today? Did someone send Grandma a photo or something?”
Felix pulled out his phone and showed her the picture. Sure enough, it was David and Jessa from last night, tangled up together on the dance floor.
“This morning, someone mailed this to the old lady,” Felix explained. “They basically ratted out Mr. Harmon and Jessa. The second she saw it, she completely lost it and sent people to drag Jessa back.”
Grandma Chelsea truly adored Ella. She couldn’t stand to see her even a little bit hurt.
Ella turned the photo over in her hands, thinking it through. “Felix, who do you think sent this?”
“Whoever it was, they wanted to expose Mr. Harmon and Jessa. They must be trying to help you out.”
Ella couldn’t help but laugh. No wonder David didn’t believe her. Honestly, everyone would think the same thing.
On the surface, it looked like she was the one who stood to gain from all this. Most people would probably assume she or one of her friends sent the photo to get even with Jessa, using Grandma Chelsea as a weapon.
From the bed, Grandma Chelsea started mumbling in her sleep. “David…”
Felix glanced over. “She’s calling for Mr. Harmon.”
David had really hurt his grandmother this time. Felix worried that their relationship would never be the same.
Just then, Ella’s phone started ringing. Rachel’s name flashed on the screen.
Ella answered. Rachel’s cold voice cut straight through. “Ella, look at the mess you’ve made. Jessa ended up in the hospital because of you. Get down here, now.”
Rachel wasn’t really asking.
Ella’s face stayed blank. “Alright. I’m on my way.”
She hung up, grabbed her bag, and headed out.
She looked up at him with wide eyes. “David, after all this, your grandma is going to hate me even more.”
She reached out, clutching his sleeve like a child. “So you’ll have to love me even more, to make up for it.”
David looked down at her, brushing his hand gently over her hair.
Jessa glowed with happiness, then shot Ella a look—part smug, part challenge.
Ella stood by the door, watching her own husband fawn over someone else. She felt small and exposed, like she didn’t belong.
Rachel snapped, “Ella, what are you still standing there for? This is all your fault. Apologize to Jessa right now.”
That was why Rachel had called her here—to make her apologize.
David looked up, his eyes dark and unreadable, locking right onto Ella.
