“Go ahead, sweetheart,” Grandma Chelsea said warmly.
Ella slipped out of the room.
David walked over to the bed, but his grandmother didn’t bother hiding her annoyance. “Why are you back here? Leave. Now.”
David managed a small, apologetic smile. “Grandma, I messed up. I’m sorry.”
She softened a little but shook her head. “Save your apology. The one you need to apologize to is Ella.”
Felix piped up from the side, clearly irritated. “Exactly, sir. You took off with Jessa and left the Mrs. Harmon to care for the old lady when she fainted. It’s like you’re the outsider, and she’s the real family here.”
David didn’t say a word.
Felix kept going. “And you pushed Ella. She hit her waist on the table. People say the loudest ones get attention, but just because Ella didn’t complain doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt. You can’t treat her like that.”
Grandma Chelsea and Felix took turns scolding him, one after the other.
David stayed silent. He glanced toward the door where Ella had left, then turned back. “Grandma, since you’re alright, I’ll head back to my room.”
He left without waiting for a reply.
Once he was gone, Grandma Chelsea let out a sigh. “Ella’s such a good girl. How did David get wrapped up in Jessa’s fingers?”
Felix nodded. “Madam, while you were sleeping, you kept calling for him. Ella heard you, so she went to the hospital and brought him back. She never said anything, but I know she did it for you. She’s got such a thoughtful heart. She doesn’t want you and David to fall out because of her.”
Grandma Chelsea’s eyes shimmered with emotion. She knew exactly how wonderful Ella was.
“Ella’s always missed out on love,” she said softly. “David… he knows how to love someone. Ella sees that. That’s why she likes him so much.”
David was born into privilege, raised to be a gentleman. He knew how to love someone, you could tell by how he spoiled Jessa—turned her into someone bold, almost impossible to handle.
He slowly undid the top two buttons on his shirt, his fingers steady and calm. “Ella,” he said again, a little softer.
She still didn’t answer.
She stood up and tried to walk past him to get into bed, treating him like he wasn’t even there.
As she moved past, he reached out and caught her wrist. With a gentle tug, she lost her balance and landed squarely in his lap.
A jolt of pain shot through her.
His legs were solid and unyielding, all muscle and strength. Sitting down so hard made her feel like she’d cracked in half.
Ella frowned and struggled to break free. “Let me go.”
David kept her there, holding her gently but firmly. His voice was low, almost teasing, and there was a hint of a smile. “Why are you ignoring me?”
