Why are you ignoring me?
His voice was soft, almost coaxing, the kind of tone that could make anyone believe he cared. With all his power and status, he only had to lower himself a little to make a girl think he was deeply in love. It was so easy to get fooled, to fall right in.
But Ella knew better. She never lost sight of the truth. Whatever feelings David had, none of them were for her.
Those were all for Jessa.
Ella let her lashes fall, hiding her eyes as she tried to get up. “Let me go.”
David’s smile grew. “Are you upset?”
She almost laughed. “What right do I have to be upset?”
“I was too rough earlier,” he said. “Did you hurt your back when you fell?”
“No,” she said quickly.
He rested his hand on her lower back, his palm warm and gentle as he wrapped his fingers around her waist. His voice dropped. “Is it here?”
It was. She’d checked in the shower earlier and found a dark bruise blooming on her skin, ugly and painful, and it would be days before it faded.
Now he was holding her right where it hurt the most, his hand so warm and careful that it almost made her shiver.
But Ella pulled away.
She hated this side of him. One moment he was cruel, the next he was kind, like giving her candy after a slap. She hated this false tenderness even more than his coldness.
She would rather he stayed distant and mean, because at least then she wouldn’t get confused.
Bruises healed, with or without his concern.
Ella tried to pry his hand away, her voice tense. “It’s nothing. Please, Mr. Harmon, just let me go.”
David had never seen her angry like this before. He’d seen plenty of women get mad—Jessa would pout and throw fits, demanding he pay attention to her.
