Ella didn’t take the bowl.

The maid gave her a smug look. “Ella, you really think you’re one of the young ladies here? Let me remind you, there are only two daughters of the Irvine family. Maureen and Jessa.”

Another maid snickered. “That’s right. Maureen is working for Doctor E now, and Jessa’s about to become Mrs. Harmon. You’re just... nobody.”

“Go on, take the soup already!”

Both maids treated Ella like she was beneath them. Ella didn’t argue. She just took the bowl and headed to the room.

As she walked through the main hall, David glanced up from his conversation with a group of execs. He frowned when he spotted her.

Wasn’t Ella supposed to be part of the Irvine family? Why was she running around like a servant?

Was this really how they treated her?

He scoffed to himself. She was always feisty with him, but when it came to everyone else, she stayed silent. She only seemed to know how to pick on him.

Ella stepped into the empty room and set the bowl on the table.

That’s when she noticed something strange in the air. It was almost nothing, barely there, but she caught it—a faint, invisible scent.

Her eyelids fluttered. Then she slumped forward onto the bed.

A few seconds later, the door creaked open and someone tiptoed inside.

It was Robert, Rachel’s nephew, a spoiled rich kid who never did anything useful.

He crept over to the bed, eyes lingering hungrily on Ella’s unconscious face. “Auntie Rachel never said the girl from the countryside was this pretty. Looks like today’s my lucky day.”

He reached toward her clothes. “Don’t blame me, sweetheart. You got in Jessa’s way and wouldn’t give up the Mrs. Harmon spot. Not my fault.

“Now you’re mine. In a minute, my aunt is going to barge in with everyone. Your reputation will be ruined. The whole city will be talking. Not even Grandma Chelsea will save you. Mr. Harmon will dump you on the spot and marry Jessa.

“I’ll even snap a few photos and videos, just so you don’t get any ideas about saying no. From now on, you’re my plaything.”
