The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 69

She missed. The person spun around, quick as lightning, and grabbed her wrist. His voice was cold and sharp as he spoke. “Ella, what do you think you’re doing?”

The silver needle slipped from her fingers and hit the floor with a soft clink. Ella froze in shock. It was David.

David was here.

“What are you doing here?” she managed to ask.

He let go of her, his deep eyes sweeping across the room before settling on Robert. “Who is he?”

Downstairs, David had spotted Robert sneaking after her and decided to follow them up.

Ella opened her mouth to explain, but footsteps sounded outside the door. The surprise she’d set up for Rachel was about to arrive.

Thinking fast, Ella grabbed David and pulled him behind the curtains.

David started to protest. “You—”

At that moment the door creaked open, and someone stepped inside.

Without thinking, Ella pressed her hand over David’s mouth, whispering, “Don’t say anything.”

In the main hall, Jessa, Peter, Rachel, and Grandma Jill were surrounded by business leaders, sharing polite laughter and conversation. Logan and Ruby stood off to the side, clearly left out, their faces tense with jealousy.

Ruby lowered her voice, grumbling, “Maureen is better than Jessa at everything. But Jessa knows how to play the game, and she landed Mr. Harmon. Look at how smug they are.”

“Just wait,” Logan replied. “Maureen will find someone just as good as Mr. Harmon. We’re not losing to them.”

Both of them were determined. Maureen’s marriage prospects mattered too much to let the second branch of the family win.

Suddenly, a scream tore through the hall.
