The girl beneath Robert fought back with everything she had, her voice ringing out across the hallway. “Let me go! Somebody, help me!”
Rachel’s eyes lit up. This was exactly what she’d hoped for. She didn’t even try to hide her glee. “Ella,” she shouted, her tone sharp and accusing. “So you really are sneaking around with a man. I can’t believe you’d do this. You’ve let me down.”
The crowd behind her started whispering, their voices full of shock. “Is that really Ella? How shameless can she be?”
Logan and Ruby watched from the side, barely trying to hide their disgust. They’d never liked Ella, always treating her like she was beneath them. “Mom, Ella is an embarrassment to our family. We need to get rid of her, once and for all.”
Grandma Jill looked like she was already on board.
Suddenly, the girl under Robert twisted around, her face finally visible. She screamed, desperate. “Mom! Dad! It’s me, help! Someone, please, help me!”
Logan and Ruby froze. The face staring up at them wasn’t Ella. It was their own daughter, Maureen.
“Oh my god. Maureen!” Ruby’s voice broke as she rushed forward, grabbing Robert and yanking him away. “Get off my daughter!”
Logan was right behind her. He shoved Robert off the bed, sending him sprawling to the floor.
Maureen’s dress was torn, her skin exposed. She looked terrified, shaking all over.
Ruby wrapped her coat around Maureen’s shoulders, her voice trembling. “Maureen, why are you here? What happened?”
Grandma Jill could barely get the words out. “Maureen? What are you doing in here?”
Rachel stared, her eyes wide. Maureen? How could it be Maureen? Where was Ella? Where did she go?
Jessa, standing just behind Rachel, tugged at her sleeve and whispered, “Mom, what’s going on? How did this happen?”
